Marauders rally falls short in defeat to Jimmies

JAMESTOWN, ND – A late rally would fall short for The University of Mary softball team (13-31, 3-19 Northern Sun) as the Marauders dropped their road doubleheader to the University of Jamestown (29-16, 10-12 NSIC). UMary fell 8-7 on a walk-off single in game one and lost 9-1 in game two.

The Marauders next doubleheader is on the road against Wayne State College on Saturday, April 25, at noon in Wayne, NE.

GAME 1 University of Mary 7 UJ 8

UMary jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Daisy Sparrow singled to second base to bring home Jenel Mallari. Madison Schamanski then laced a single to left field to score Jianna Cota. UJ responded with four runs in the first inning and two in the second to take a 6-2 lead.

The Marauders scored three runs in the top of the third inning to cut the Jimmies' lead to one. Schamanski opened the scoring by smashing a ground-rule double to right field to bring in Cota. Kaitlyn McLaughlin then slapped a single through the left side, scoring Sparrow. Genevieve Hastings delivered a bases-loaded walk to make it a 6-5 ballgame.

UJ added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth inning to extend the lead to 7-5. UMary scored two runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 7-7. Ariana Retuta hit an RBI groundout to score Cota. Bree Waldron came around to score after McLaughlin reached on a throwing error by the UJ third baseman.

The Jimmies walked the game off with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning when Kylie Yanzuk singled to left-center field to score the winning run. Jayleen Rojas pitched 5.1 innings of relief and allowed only one earned run, while striking out two batters.

The Marauders finished the game with nine hits and three walks, while the Jimmies had ten hits and three walks.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

Madison Schamanski went 3-for-4 with one double, two RBIs, and one run scored.

Jianna Cota went 3-for-4 with three runs scored.

Daisy Sparrow went 1-for-3 with one RBI, one run scored, and one walk.

Jenel Mallari went 1-for-4 with one run scored.

Kaitlyn McLaughlin went 1-for-4 with one RBI.

GAME 2 University of Mary 1 UJ 9 F/5

The Jimmies grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Daisy Sparrow tied the game up in the top of the third when she smacked a single up the middle, scoring Genevieve Hastings.

The game opened up in the bottom of the fourth inning as UJ exploded for seven runs. The Jimmies added another run in the fifth inning to walk the game off and earn a 9-1 victory.

The Marauders posted two hits and three walks, while the Jimmies had 11 hits and four walks.

Daisy Sparrow went 1-for-1 with one walk and one RBI.

Claire Tompkins went 1-for-2.

Genevieve Hastings went 0-for-1 with one walk, one steal, and one run scored.
