Marauders offense explodes in series split to Wolves

BISMARCK, ND – The University of Mary softball team (13-29, 3-17 Northern Sun) combined to score 18 runs over two games to earn a series split against Northern State University (15-21, 7-13 NSIC). UMary fell 10-7 in game one before coming back to win game two 11-5.

The Marauders won their third conference game of the season, surpassing last year's win total of two. UMary's next doubleheader is on the road against the University of Jamestown on Sunday, April 19, at noon.

GAME 1 University of Mary 7 NSU 10

UMary trailed 6-0 after NSU scored six runs in the first two innings. A double off the right field wall by Genevieve Hastings would bring home Ariana Retuta to score the Marauders first run in the bottom of the second inning.

Jianna Cota smashed her first career home run when she blasted a three-run shot over the left wall in the bottom of the third inning. The Wolved made it an 8-4 ballgame when they scored two runs in the top of the fifth.

Daisy Sparrow cut the NSU lead in half when she lifted a two-run homer, her third of the season, over left field. The Wolves added two runs in the top of the seventh to take a 10-6 lead.

The Marauders continued to battle in the seventh inning. Ariana Retuta hit an RBI groundout to the shortstop to score Cota. It would not be enough as Sparrow would be thrown out at third to end the game in a 10-7 NSU victory.

The Marauders finished the game with 12 hits and one walk, while the Wolves had 18 hits and four walks.

Jianna Cota went 3-for-4 with one home run, three RBIs, and three runs scored.

Daisy Sparrow went 3-for-4 with one home run, two RBIs, and one run scored.

GAME 2 University of Mary 11 NSU 5

The Wolved jumped out to a 3-0 lead at the top of the first inning. UMary responded by tying the game in the bottom of the first inning after a bases-loaded throwing error by the NSU catcher.

The second inning would see both teams score one run. Daisy Sparrow hit a sac fly to center field to score Genevieve Hastings.

Claire Tompkins gave the Marauders their first lead of the day in the third inning when she singled through the right side to bring home Ariana Retuta. A bases-loaded walk for Jenel Mallari brought Madison Schamanski to the plate. Jianna Cota made it an 8-4 ballgame when she blasted a two-run double to left-center, scoring Mallari and Genevieve Hastings.

NSU got one run back in the top of the fourth inning. Cassidy Bagnell put the UMary back up four runs after she singled home Lalaina Baker in the bottom of the fourth.

The Marauders extended their lead to 11-5 in the bottom of the sixth inning. Mallari lifted a sac fly to right field to score Olivia Gomez. Jianna Cota then drove in her sixth RBI of the day when she singled through the left side, scoring Bagnell.

Arria Johnson showed great grit as the junior faced early adversity but battled through to earn her eighth win of the season. Johnson pitched all seven innings as the Graham, WA, native recorded her seventh complete game of the year.

The Marauders posted nine hits and ten walks, while the Wolves had 14 hits and one walk.
