Marauders earn split in Coco Beach, FL

COCO BEACH, FL – The University of Mary softball team (7-11) defeated Walsh University 9-3 but fell 8-6 to Holy Family University on day two of the Spring Games.

The Marauders stay in Coco Beach, FL, for day three of their Spring Games on Wednesday, March 4. UMary takes on Davis & Elkins College at 2:30 pm and then competes against Holy Family University at 2:30 pm.

GAME 1 University of Mary 9 WU 3

UMary took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning after Jenel Mallari smacked a single to left field, scoring Kaitlyn McLaughlin and Olivia Gomez. The Marauders added on another run in the third inning when Daisy Sparrow singled to the pitcher to score Mallari.

The lead would double for UMary in the top of the fifth inning. Jianna Cota hit a single to center field to bring home Genevieve Hastings. Cota then came around to score when Janelle Bergmann laced a single to left field. Francesca Villaneda then followed up with a double to right field, scoring Bergmann.

The Cavaliers would attempt to come back, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the Marauders lead in half.

UMary regained the momentum with a three-run sixth inning that gave the Marauders a 9-3 lead. Lalaina Baker came home to score after Cota reached on a fielder's choice. Sparrow would get the big hit of the day when she smashed a single to center, scoring Cota and Hastings.

Jayleen Rojas picked up her second win of the season, pitching four innings and allowing three runs while striking out three batters. Arria Johnson earned her first save of the season as she pitched three shutout innings. The Marauders recorded 13 hits and four walks, while the Cavaliers had ten hits and no walks.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

Daisy Sparrow went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and one walk.

Jenel Mallari went 2-for-3 with one triple, one RBI, one run scored, and one walk.

Francesca Villaneda went 2-for-2 with one double and one RBI.

Olivia Gomez went 2-for-5 with one run scored and one steal.

Lalaina Baker went 1-for-1 with one double, one steal, and one run scored.

Genevieve Hastings went 1-for-2 with two walks, two runs scored, one double, and one steal.

Jianna Cota went 1-for-4 with two Rbis and two runs scored.

Kaitlyn McLaughlin went 1-for-4 with one run scored and two steals.

Janelle Bergmann went 1-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored.

GAME 2 University of Mary 6 HFU 8

The Tigers took a commanding 8-0 lead at the end of the top of the second inning. UMary responded with two runs in the bottom of the second inning after Ariana Retuta smashed a double to left field, scoring Janelle Bergmann and Francesca Villaneda.

Lalaina Baker made the score 8-3 in the third inning when she singled to right field, bringing home Jianna Cota. The fourth inning would see Bergmann score on a wild pitch. Jenel Mallari would then make it an 8-6 ballgame when she doubled to left field to bring home Kaitlyn McLaughlin and Ariana Retuta

The Marauders offense would struggle in the last three innings as UMary only recorded one hit and failed to score. UMary finished the game with ten hits and three walks, while the Tigers had 13 hits and three walks.
