COCO BEACH, FL – The University of Mary softball team (8-12) was victorious over Davis & Elkins College 10-2, but dropped their second game 7-6 to Salem University on day three of the Spring Games.
The Marauders return to Coco Beach, FL, for their final day of Spring Games on Thursday, March 5. UMary competed against the University of Michigan-Dearborn at 12:15 pm and then takes on West Virginia Wesleyan College at 4:45 pm.
GAME 1 University of Mary 10 D&E 2 F/5
UMary grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the bottom inning. Kaitlyn McLaughlin came around to score when Jenel Mallari reached on an error. Mallari then reached home after Ariana Retuta hit an RBI groundout to the shortstop.
The bottom of the second inning saw Daisy Sparow score when Kaitlyn McLaughlin recorded an RBI groundout to first base. The Senators scored a run in the third and fourth innings to cut the UMary lead to 3-2.
The Marauders would explode for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to win the game. Jianna Cota started the scoring when she singled, scoring Mallari. Ariana Retuta followed up by driving home Cota and Genevieve Hastings with a single.
Daisy Sparrow roped a single to right field to score Retuta. The Marauders walked the game off when Jenel Mallari reached on an error by the center fielder, scoring Sparrow, Janelle Bergmann, and Olivia Gomez.
Jayleen Rojas picked up her third win of the season, pitching four innings and allowing two runs while striking out three batters. Arria Johnson pitched a clean fifth inning to earn her second save of the year.
The Marauders recorded ten hits and one walk, while the Senators had six hits and three walks.

Daisy Sparrow went 2-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored.
Olivia Gomez went 2-for-3 with one run scored and one steal.
Ariana Retuta went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and one walk.
Kaitlyn McLaughlin went 1-for-4 with one triple, one run scored, and one RBI.
Jenel Mallari went 1-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored.
Genevieve Hastings went 1-for-3 with one run scored.
Jianna Cota went 1-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored.
Madison Schamanski went 1-for-1.
GAME 2 University of Mary 6 SU 7
The Marauders took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Jianna Cota hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Kaitlyn McLaughlin. The Tigers tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning.
Daisy Sparrow and Ariana Retuta scored on an error by the SU left fielder to give UMary a 3-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning. The Tigers scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 6-3 lead.
The Marauders would show grit and rally to tie the game in the top of the seventh inning. Sparrow smashed a double to right field, scoring Cota and Retuta. Sparrow would then come home to tie the game when Ariane Sims reached on an error by the second baseman.
LU would end the game with a two-out bases-loaded walk-off single to center field to win 7-6 in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Marauders finished the game with four hits and six walks, while the Tigers had 13 hits and three walks.
