Sinclair delivers late as Marauders rally past Blue Devils 2-1 in ACHA tournament opener

MARYVILLE, MO – Rallying behind third period goals from Alex Senf and Palmer Sinclair in the final eight minutes of play, the University of Mary remained perfect in national tournament opening games with a 2-1 win over Lawrence Tech. The Marauders advance to the second round of the American Collegiate Hockey Association Men's Division 1 National Tournament and will face Maryville University.

Playing in their sixth straight ACHA national tournament, the Marauders have won their opening game each time.

Faceoff between the Marauders and the Saints is set for 4:45 pm on Saturday, March 14, at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, MO. The Marauders are the 10th seed while the Saints are #7.

The Blue Devils, seeded #23, cracked the scoreboard first in a closely played opening period. UMary held an 11-8 edge in shots but Lawrence Tech scored the only goal when Brad Scott slipped the puck past Caleb Cross at 15:31.

The Marauders looked to have tied the game at 14:38 of the second period. Crashing the right side of the net, Liam Massie redirected a Sinclair pass sent through the crease that appeared to crack the goal line. Instead the officials whistled no goal with the puck smothered by Blue Devils goaltender Bret Thome. The no-goal call was upheld after a video review.

UMary continued to press for the equalizer but came up empty despite a 9-4 shot advantage in the middle period.

Despite generating numerous more scoring opportunities than the Blue Devils, it took until 11:15 of the third period for UMary to dent the Lawrence Tech net. Joe Gronholz won the draw in the left circle and pulled the puck back to Senf. Wasting no time, Senf gathered the puck and rifled a shot from the top of the circle into the upper left corner of the goal to draw the Marauders even at 1-1.

With the Blue Devils making a push with a flurry of shots with four minutes to play, Cross played big to keep the puck out of the net with a handful of big saves.

After narrowly missing out on tying the game in the second and time running out in regulation, the Marauders fourth line delivered UMary's biggest goal of the season with just 2:07 to play.

Playing the puck from deep in their own end, Will Falconer started a UMary rush along the right boards before dumping the puck to Massie just inside the blue line to spring the UMary captain free. Carrying the puck through the right circle before cutting towards the net, Massie spotted Sinclair flying down the slot. With perfect precision and timing, Massie slid the puck through the crease to Sinclair, who tapped home the puck into a wide-open net for the game-winning goal.

Cross finished the game with 22 saves. Tome had 33 saves as UMary held a 35-23 advantage in shots.

In a meeting between two of the least penalized teams in the nation, UMary was whistled twice for 4:00 while Lawrence Tech took one minor penalty.

The Marauders improve to 27-13-0-0-0-1 (W-L-OTL-T-SOW-SOL) overall. Lawrence Tech finishes the season 19-8-1-0-2-0.
