BISMARCK, ND – Down a point in the closing seconds, the University of Mary men's basketball team had three shots in the paint but no basket luck as time expired in a 74-73 loss to visiting Bemidji State University.
Attacking an aggressive Beavers defense that packed the paint,
Kelton Coleman's initial shot missed for the Marauders, along with putback attempts by
Amare Jackson and
Noah Thomas. A would-be fourth shot attempt for UMary after another offensive rebound came just after the buzzer sounded to end the Marauders hopes of a Northern Sun win.
The Marauders attack featured five scorers in double digits but a cold second half offset the Marauders diverse scoring punch. The Marauders scored 45 points in the opening half to claim a 45-34 lead at intermission but UMary managed just 28 points in the second half.
Coleman led the Marauders with 14 points. He also had five rebounds and four assists.
Thomas hit four treys on his way to 12 points. Contributing all over the court, the senior guard led the Marauders with eight rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Coming off the bench, Jackson 1 chipped in 12 points and
Alex Dvorak 10.
Jackson Ware added 11 points, six rebounds and two blocks.
Henry Shannon III scored 23 points an grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Beavers. John Pecarich added 21.
The Marauders (5-19, 3-15 NSIC) outscored the Beavers (7-16, 4-14 NSIC) 18-9 off turnovers and 20-12 on second chance points. UMary also hit 11 treys to five for the Beavers. However BSU was 13-of-18 at the free throw line with UMary making all ten of its attempts.
UMary next plays at MSU Moorhead on Thursday, February 12 at 7:30 pm.
