BISMARCK, ND – An outstanding scoring performance by
Bergan Kinnebrew helped lead the University of Mary women's basketball team (19-7, 12-5 Northern Sun) to a 76-66 victory over the University of Minnesota Duluth (15-6, 13-4 NSIC). The Marauders are now in a tie for 3
rd in the NSIC standings.
Kinnebrew dropped 40 points, one short of tying her career-high, shooting 9-of-17 from the field, 1-of-2 from three, and a remarkable 21-of-22 from the free-throw line. The Bismarck, ND, native also had five rebounds, two assists, and one block. Kinnebrew is averaging 35.5 points against the Bulldogs this season.
Allison Undlin recorded 16 points, nine rebounds, and three blocks. Undlin has recorded double-digit points in 17 straight games.
Chloe Pfau posted 12 points, seven rebounds, and two steals.
Eden Fridley had nine rebounds, four points, and three steals.
Both teams exchanged leads to open the game, with the Bulldogs edging out the Marauders 20-17 at the end of the first quarter. UMary outscored UMD 16-13 to tie the game at 33-33 going into halftime.
The lead changed 11 times in the third quarter as the Bulldogs would take a 55-53 lead going into the final 12 minutes of action. Kinnebrew came up big in the fourth quarter, scoring 11 of her 40 points in the period. The Bulldogs scored only 11 points in the fourth quarter as the Marauders held UMD to 17.65% from the field and 0-of-6 shooting from three-point range. UMary finished the quarter with 23 points to win 76-66.
UMary shot 22-of-58 (37.9%) from the field and 3-of-15 (20%) from three, while UMD went 24-of-66 (36.4%) from the floor and 4-of-21 (19%) from behind the arc. The Marauders shot 29-of-30 (92.3%) from the free-throw line, while the Bulldogs went 14-of-21 (66.7%) from the charity stripe.
UMary impressed on the glass, outrebounding UMD 44-36. The Marauders committed 12 turnovers, compared to 10 giveaways by the Bulldogs. UMary is now 1-1 on the season series against UMD.
The Marauders stay home to challenge Bemidji State University on Saturday, February 7, at 1:30 pm.
