JAMESTOWN, ND – Great pitching helped lead the University of Mary softball team to two victories on Friday. UMary (5-5) defeated Concordia College (0-2) 10-1 and earned a 3-2 win over the University of Jamestown (6-1).
The Marauders next contest is a doubleheader against William Jewell College in Liberty, MO, on Thursday, February 26, beginning at 3 pm.
GAME 1 University of Mary 10 Concordia College 1 F/5
Bree Waldron opened the scoring for the Marauders in the top of the first inning when she singled to the pitcher, scoring Kaitlyn McLaughlin and Genevieve Hastings. Madison Schamanski then made it a 3-0 game when she smacked a double to left to score Waldron.
The Marauders added three more runs in the third inning to extend their lead to 6-0. Waldron came around to score after Jianna Cota singled up the middle. Cota would reach home when Schamanski hit a sac fly to left field. Jenel Mallari smacked a double to right center to score Daisy Sparrow.
UMary scored four runs in the fourth inning to hold a 10-0 advantage. Cota laced a ground-rule double, scoring Hastings. Schamanski followed up by smashing a two-run homer to right field. Mallari hit her second double of the game to bring home Sparrow.
Jayleen Rojas picked up her first win of the season, pitching three innings and allowing zero runs. Ivee Johnsen pitched 1.1 innings of relief and gave up one run. Elyssa Verploegen shut the door in the fifth inning to secure the 10-1 victory.
The Marauders posted 14 hits and two walks while the Cobbers had five hits and four walks.

Madison Schamanski went 2-for-2 with one home run, four RBIs, one double and one run scored.
Jenel Mallari went 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs.
Genevieve Hastings went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, one double, one walk and one steal.
Jianna Cota went 2-for-2 with two runs scored, one double, one RBI and one walk.
Kaitlyn McLaughlin went 2-for-4 with one run scored and one steal.
Bree Waldron went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Daisy Sparrow went 1-for-3 with two runs scored.
GAME 2 University of Mary 3 UJ 2
The Jimmies grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Marauders would be shut out for the first five innings before taking the lead with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Kaitlyn McLaughlin came around to score after Olivia Gomez reached on a throwing error by the UJ third baseman. Madison Hunter gave UMary a 3-1 lead when she smacked a double to left, scoring Gomez and Genevieve Hastings.
Arria Johnson got the start and pitched great for six innings, allowing one run and striking out three batters. Johnson would run into trouble in the top of the seventh when the Jimmies would load the bases with no outs.
Elyssa Verploegen came in relief and walked the first batter to make the score 3-2. Verploegen then rallied back by striking out the next batter. Daisy Sparrow recorded the second out when she made a diving stop on a grounder to third and threw the runner out at home. Verploegen picked up her first save of the season when Sparrow would again field a grounder and touch third for the force out.
The Marauders posted five hits and one walk while the Jimmies had seven hits and two walks. Arria Johnson picked up her fourth win of the season.
