Marauders fall in hard-fought doubleheader to WJC

LIBERTY, MO – Despite a great performance from Jayleen Rojas, the University of Mary softball team fell on the road in a hard-fought double header against William Jewel College. UMary (5-7) lost game one 3-2 to WJC (5-9) and dropped game two 4-3 after eight innings.

The Marauders stay in Liberty, MO, to challenge the Cardinals on Friday, February 27,  in a doubleheader at 3 pm.

GAME 1 University of Mary 2 WJC 3

UMary grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning after Ariana Retuta roped a double to right-center field to score Olivia Gomez. Madison Schamanski made the score 2-0 in the fourth inning when she hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Genevieve Hastings.

Jaylen Rojas was excellent in her fourth start of the season, pitching six shutout innings and striking out three batters. The Marauders were unable to keep the lead in the seventh innings as the Cardinals scored three runs to walk the game off and win 3-2.

UMary posted six hits and one walk, while WJC had nine hits and four walks.

Genevieve Hastings went 2-for-3 with two doubles and one run scored.

Kaitlyn McLaughlin went 2-for-4 with one steal.

Ariana Retuta went 1-for-3 with one double and one RBI.

Olivia Gomez went 1-for-3 with one run scored.

GAME 2 University of Mary 3 WJC 4 F/8

The Marauders opened the scoring again in the first inning after Francesca Villaneda drew a bases-loaded walk to score Kaitlyn McLaughlin.

The fourth inning saw McLaughlin extend the Marauders lead when she singled to third with the bases loaded and no one out. Lalaina Baker made it a 3-0 game on the next play when she came around to score after UMary grounded into a double play.

The Cardinals got a run back in the bottom of the fourth inning to make the score 3-1. After UMary recorded the first two outs in the seventh inning, WJC would single and then hit a game-tying home run to send the contest into overtime. An RBI double in the bottom of the eighth inning would see the Cardinals walk it off for the second straight game.

Arria Johnson got the start and pitched the whole game, throwing seven innings and allowing three earned runs. The Marauders posted six hits and ten walks while the Cardinals had five hits and four walks.

Kaitlyn McLaughlin went 2-for-3 with one RBI, one walk, and one steal.

Jianna Cota went 1-for-4 with one walk.

Genevieve Hastings went 1-for-4 with one double and one steal.

Olivia Gomez went 1-for-1.

Francesca Villaneda went 0-1 with two walks and one RBI.
