Two early, two late push #11 Marauders past visiting Warriors 4-0

MANDAN, ND – With the #11 University of Mary hockey team holding on to a tenuous two-goal lead late on the game, Caleb Cross came up big in net with visiting Waldorf University on a power play to maintain the Marauders advantage. A pair of goals in the final 75 seconds for the Marauders created late separation from the Warriors in a 4-0 victory for UMary.

Dylan Cunningham, Dain Sardelli and John Lang all had two assists in the game and four different Marauders found the net, including seniors Derek Dropik, Amraj Gill and Lucas Medeiros in the penultimate home game of their UMary careers.

UMary improves to 23-12-0-0-0-1 (W-L-OTL-T-SOW-SOL) overall and 20-12-0-0-0-1 against ACHA MD1. Waldorf is 13-16-1-0-0-1 overall.

Dropik got the scoring started for the Marauders just 4:33 into the game when he scored off an assist from Cunningham.

Playing in his first game since September, Cunningham continued to make an impact on the game when the second-year defender set up fellow blueliner Gill for a power play goal at 17:07, sending the Marauders into the first intermission leading 2-0 despite outshooting the Warriors 18-5.

A scoreless second period was more tightly played as the Marauders edge in shots was just 10-8, in part to providing three power play opportunities to the Warriors.

Waldorf continued to stymie the UMary attack in the third, including killing off one major and two minor penalties to remain in the game. But with Cross turning aside any shots by the Warriors, the Marauders need for additional goals was nil.

UMary finally added to the scoreboard with two late goals as Isaac Flatley scored at 18:45 with Medeiros following at 19:26.

Cross finished with 19 saves to earn his third shutout of the season. Matthew Loney made 44 stops for the Warriors.

Next up for the Marauders is Senior Day when UMary hosts Waldorf in the second and final game of the weekend on Saturday, February 14. Faceoff is 5 pm at the Starion Sports Complex Schwan Cadillac Rink in Mandan, ND. It is also the last home game of the season for the Marauders.

Eight Marauders seniors will be honored during the first intermission. The seniors are Amraj Gill, Michael Heitkamp, Liam Massie, Lucas Medeiros, Dain Sardelli, Jake Murray, Derek Dropik and Palmer Sinclair.
