WINONA, MN – A career night by
Tamarrein Henderson in a hotly contested contest nearly pushed the visiting University of Mary men's basketball team past Winona State University. Instead, the Warriors withstood a late challenge from the Marauders to claim an 84-80 win.
The Northern Sun game featured 13 lead changes and six ties. The largest lead of the night was an 8-point advantage for the Warriors.
The NSIC leaders in treys made per game with 10, UMary managed to hit just six in the game in 29 chances with Henderson accounting for four of the treys. With the outside game not working, the Marauders attacked inside and outscored the Warriors 56-34 in the paint. Instead it was Winona State that used the long ball effectively, knocking down 11 triples in just 23 attempts.
Trailing the entire second half, back-to-back baskets by
Cayden Redfield and Henderson pulled the Marauders into a 68-68 deadlock with 6:16 to play. After another basket by the Warriors, Henderson scored in the paint to again pull UMary even at 70-70.
The Warriors responded with four straight baskets to build a 78-70 lead that proved too much for the Marauders to overcome. UMary cut the deficit to 82-80 on a tip-in of an offensive rebound by
Jackson Ware with 34 seconds to play but a pair of Winona State free throws iced the game for the Warriors.
Henderson was clutch all game, making 10-of-16 shots overall and 4-of-8 from behind the arc. He also had two rebounds and didn't commit a turnover. His previous career-high was 17 points.
Kelton Coleman was incredibly proficient, scoring 16 points on 8-of-11 shooting. He was perfect inside the arc. Coleman made three steals in the game and ranks second in the NSIC in thefts.
Tyresse Poku Mensah scored 15 points, a career-high. The freshman was 7-for-10 from the floor. Poku Mensah also snared six rebounds to tie Ware for the team-high.
Ryan Heise led the Warriors with 26 points and eight rebounds. He knocked down 12-of-17 shots. Tyler Mason drilled four treys and scored 21 points. Alessandro Tonelli also hit four treys and scored 17 points.
Despite shooting 20.7% on 3-pointers, UMary made 52.9% of its field goals overall, making an incredible 30-of-39 shot attempts from inside the arc. Winona State connected on 53.4% of its shots for the game.
The Marauders wrap up the weekend with a 4 pm game at Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday, January 31.
