Ware leads Marauders efforts in road loss to NSIC-leading SMSU

MARSHALL, MN – Facing the Northern Sun's first place team for the second straight Saturday, Jackson Ware scored 14 points to pace the University of Mary men's basketball team in the Marauders 76-48 loss at Southwest Minnesota State University.

SMSU and St. Cloud State University, UMary's foe the previous week, are tied for the top of the NSIC.

Short a pair of starters and three total from their regular rotation, the Marauders (5-13 overall, 3-9 NSIC) struggled to score from deep while the Mustangs (12-5 overall, 10-2 NSIC) were on fire. UMary, which entered the weekend leading the NSIC in treys attempted and made per game, finished 8-for-37 from beyond the arc. SMSU, the top team in the NSIC in 3-point shooting percentage, drained 16-of-34 trey attempts.

The Mustangs started strong, scoring first to maintain the lead throughout the game. Ware scored the Marauders first five points in the game but UMary couldn't find a scoring groove against the #2 defense in the NSIC.

Ware hit 5-of-9 shots overall and was 2-for-5 on treys. He also hit both of his free throws and grabbed six rebounds.

Alex Dvorak led the UMary bench with nine points, hitting two of his three trey attempts in the game. He also had two assists and two steals. Cayden Redfield added another eight points for a UMary bench that contributed 28 points overall in the game. Tshawn Bois picked up a team-high seven rebounds and added two treys.

Tyresse Poku Mensah had a team-best four assists and three steals while seeing his most extensive action of the season.

UMary ranks 11th in NCAA Division II in bench scoring with 35 points/game.

Micah Schlaak led SMSU with 23 points behind five treys. He also had three steals and three blocks. Mason Lund added 10 points. Seven different Mustangs hit treys in the game.

The Marauders return home to host Wayne State College at 7:30 pm on Friday, January 23, and Augustana at 5:30 pm on Saturday, January 24, at the McDowell Activity Center.
