BISMARCK, ND – A high-flying first half for the University of Mary men's basketball team featuring an abundance of points and three-pointers. A rock 'em sock 'em second half favored visiting Wayne State College and allowed the Wildcats to escape the McDowell Activity Center with a 91-74 win over the Marauders.
The Marauders (5-14 overall 3-10 Northern Sun) let the rock fly in the first half and the top team in the Northern Sun for three-pointers made per game drained 11 treys on the way to a 52-47 lead at intermission. UMary made 11-of-21 shots from behind the arc and shot 54.3% overall.
Wayne State (11-8, 7-6) came out on fire in the second half and controlled the paint while continuing to knock down big threes. The Wildcats scored the first 17 points coming out of intermission to take control of the game. After hitting 7-of-12 treys in the first 20 minutes of play, Wayne State drained 5-of-8 in the second half and outscored UMary 18-2 inside. The Marauders hit just 5-of-23 3-pointers in the second half and made just 22.6% of their field goals after making 54.3% in the first half.
For the game UMary shot 39.4% overall and 34.4% on treys. Wayne State connected on 50.8% of its shots overall while making 60% on treys.
UMary tied its season-high with 16 treys in the game in 44 opportunities. The Marauders lead the NSIC in treys/game at 9.9.
Kelton Coleman led a short-handed Marauders squad in scoring with 19 points. UMary's leading scorer on the season was impressively efficient, making 8-of-12 shots overall and 3-of-6 of his treys. The NSIC steals leader pilfered the ball three times and added two assists.
Tshawn Bois added 12 points as he hit a team-best four treys. He also grabbed a team-leading five rebounds.
Noah Thomas, who joined Coleman and Bois in coming off the bench, also hit for 12 points. He made 5-of-7 shots overall and was 2-for-3 on treys.
UMary's bench contributed 51 points on a night the Marauders were missing a pair of starters and three key rotational players. UMary's bench averages over 35 points/game, the 12
th highest total in NCAA Division II.
Alex Dvorak added two treys and scored nine points.
Parker Brodina and
Cayden Redfield had eight points each.
Tamarrein Henderson dished five assists.
JJ Ferrin led the Wildcats with 29 points as he drained 9-of-11 shots from behind the arc. Andrew Stoles added 23 points and nine rebounds.
The Marauders wrap up their home weekend on Saturday, January 24, with a visit from Augustana. Game time is 5:30 pm at the MAC.
