SIOUX FALLS, SD – It was a historic night for
Bergan Kinnebrew and the University of Mary women's basketball team as the Bismarck, ND, native reached the 1,000-point milestone as UMary (15-5, 8-3 NSIC) earned a hard-fought overtime road victory 83-79 over the University of Sioux Falls (8-9, 5-6 NSIC).
Kinnebrew scored 25 points on 11-of-12 shooting from the free-throw line to reach 1,006 career points. She becomes the 24
th Marauder reach that 1k milestone and the 12
th to do so in the NCAA era. Kinnebrew also contributed five rebounds and five steals against USF.
Allison Undlin recorded her 5
th double-double of the season, scoring a career-high 21 points to go along with ten boards and two blocks. The Mohall, ND, native shot 9-of-13 from the field. Undlin has recorded double-digit points in 11 straight games.
Eden Fridley posted 15 points, six rebounds, and five assists.
Chloe Pfau had 11 points, four rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
Cassie Erickson came off the bench to contribute six points and five rebounds.
The game opened with the Marauders jumping out to an 8-0 lead. USF would end the first quarter on a 6-0 run to tie the game at 16-16. The second quarter would see neither team manage to take control as the score would remain tied at 30-30 going into halftime.
Kinnebrew would bank in a layup right before time expired in the third quarter to give UMary a 49-48 lead. The fourth quarter was exciting as both teams exchanged leads late. Kinnebrew made two big free throws to give UMary a 65-60 lead with just 1:06 remaining. Landree Wilson would knock down a three and later hit two free throws to tie the game 65-65 with just six seconds remaining. Kinnebrew's game-winning shot rolled off the rim as the contest went into overtime.
Overtime would be a thriller as both teams would again exchange leads, but clutch free throws by Fridley and Pfau would see the Marauders hold an 81-76 lead with 5.8 seconds remaining. A three by Anna Valer cut the lead to 81-79 with 2.1 seconds remaining. Kinnebrew would score her 24
th and 25
th points of the game at the charity stripe to secure an 83-79 victory for the Marauders.
UMary shot 29-of-77 (37.7%) from the field and 6-of-28 (21.4%) from three, while USF went 28-of-64 (43.8%) from the floor and 6-of-17 (25%) from behind the arc. The Marauders shot 19-of-23 (82.6%) from the free-throw line, while the Cougars went 17-of-19 (89.5%) from the charity stripe.
UMary lost the rebounding battle 41-47 to SCSU. Turnovers played an important role as the Marauders created 21 USF turnovers while UMary gave the ball away 14 times.
The Marauders stay on the road to compete against the Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, MN, on Saturday, January 15, at 7:00 pm.
