Free throw disparity sinks Marauders in loss to Cougars

SIOUX FALLS, SD – A huge free throw disparity against a hot home team was too much for a shorthanded University of Mary men's basketball team to overcome in a 90-79 loss at the University of Sioux Falls.

The Marauders shot just ten free throws to 32 for the Cougars, who won their seventh straight game. Only six of the USF free throws came after the Cougars took a 70-68 lead with 7:48 to play.

Taking a 42-37 lead into halftime, the Marauders claimed their last lead of the night on an Andre Austin fastbreak layup for a 55-54 advantage with 12:46 to play. Falling down by five, the Marauders pulled even at 68-68 on a Redfield trey with just over eight minutes to play. In a game that featured 13 lead changes and seven ties, USF pulled away with a 13-2 run.

The NSIC leader in made treys per game at just under ten, the Marauders sank 12 triples in 39 attempts while the Cougars drained six. UMary's high pressure full court defense forced 16 turnovers and outscored USF 29-15 in points off turnovers.
