Coleman, Brodina pace Marauders efforts in loss to NSIC-leading Huskies

BISMARCK, ND – Looking to take down the Northern Sun leader, the University of Mary men's basketball team stayed within striking distance much of the day before the Marauders succumbed late to visiting St. Cloud State University 72-60. UMary forced more turnovers than the Marauders committed but a big day on the boards by SCSU keyed the Huskies win.

Kelton Coleman led the Marauders in scoring for a second straight game and the seventh time this season as he produced 17 points. One of the nation's leaders in steals pilfered the ball four times in the game as UMary (5-11 overall, 3-7 Northern Sun) forced SCSU (11-5, 8-2) into 14 turnovers to just 11 for the Marauders.

Parker Brodina scored a personal-best 11 points. The freshman knocked down 5-of-6 shots, including his lone trey attempt.

Despite 11 rebounds by Jackson Ware and seven by Tshawn Bois, the Marauders trailed the Huskies on the boards 54-40. Even with the deficit UMary held a 17-16 edge in second chance points by grabbing 18 offensive boards, though the Huskies outscored UMary 42-28 in the paint.

Down 15 points in the first half, the Marauders held firm and used a 21-5 run to pull even at 31-31. Treys by Bois, Tamarrein Henderson, Brodina and two by Coleman keyed the run, with Coleman contributing eight points total and Brodina five.

The Huskies regained their footing and grabbed a 37-32 lead at intermission. UMary held within six with 13 minutes to play before an 8-0 SCSU pushed the Huskies into a double digit lead for the remainder of the game.

UMary held SCSU to a 3-for-16 effort behind the arc and a shooting percentage of .429 for the game. The Marauders were 7-of-29 on treys and made just 31.4% of their shots.

Luke Winkel posted 16 points and six assists for SCSU. Wyatt Hawks scored 11 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and blocked four shots. Nate Dahl added nine points, 11 rebounds and four assists.

The Marauders next visit the University of Sioux Falls and Southwest Minnesota State on Friday and Saturday, January 16-17. UMary returns home to host Wayne State College on Friday, January 23, at the McDowell Activity Center.
