Tough defense propels Marauders to a 79-67 win over the Huskies

BISMARCK, ND – A tough defensive effort saw the University of Mary women's basketball team get back to their winning ways at home as UMary took down St. Cloud State University 79-67. The Marauders improve to 7-1 at home this season.

UMary (14-5, 7-3 Northern Sun) shot 27-of-59 (45.8%) from the field and 12-of-27 (44.4%) from three, while holding SCSU (5-10, 2-8 NSIC) to 24-of-63 (38.1%) from the floor and 3-of-12 (25%) from behind the arc. The Marauders shot 13-of-17 (76.5%) from the free-throw line, while the Huskies went 16-of-23 (69.6%) from the charity stripe.

Bergan Kinnebrew led all scorers with 18 points while also producing six rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Allison Undlin scored 17 points and grabbed four boards.

Emily Jaenke had 12 points off the bench, knocking down four treys. Anna Lenzen recorded 10 points and four rebounds, shooting 4-of-7 from the field.

Chloe Pfau was great on the glass, bringing down nine rebounds to go along with nine points and two steals. Eden Fridley had eight points and four assists. Cassie Erickson posted five points and three assists off the bench.

The first quarter was competitive, as the Marauders took a 20-16 lead at the end. UMary ended the second quarter on a 14-5 run to hold a 37-27 lead.

The Huskies would cut the Marauders lead to five near the end of the third quarter. Emily Jaenke would bank in a three at the buzzer to end the third quarter with a 52-44 UMary lead. The Marauders offense came alive in the fourth quarter, scoring 27 points on 10-of-13 (76.9%) shooting from the field and 3-of-4 (75%) from behind the arc.  

UMary lost the rebounding battle 41-35 to SCSU. The Marauders committed 15 turnovers, and the Huskies gave the ball away 14 times.

The Marauders hit the road to challenge the University of Sioux Falls in Sioux Falls, SD, on Friday, January 16, at 7:30 pm.
