WINONA, MN – Playing their first conference road game of the season, the University of Mary women's soccer team just missed on a couple golden opportunities on their way to earning a scoreless draw with Winona State University.
Defense was front and center for both teams as the Marauders (2-3-1 overall, 0-2-1 NSIC) and Warriors (2-0-3, 1-0-2) found their scoring opportunities to be limited. Though the Marauders had a pair of shots glance off the goal frame, both sides finished with two shots on frame while WSU held a slight 10-7 advantage in total shots.
The Warriors started fast, firing a pair of shots at the Marauders goal in the first couple minutes. UMary weathered the storm as
Kadyn Dilger made a sprawling save on a shot heading to the bottom left corner of the net.
UMary countered and just missed grabbing a lead as a header by
Rachel Gensch off a corner kick pinged of the upper right post in the 6
th minute.
The Marauders missed another golden opportunity by inches in the second half. One-timing a perfectly placed pass into the box from
Chloe Brand,
Olivia Gardner drove her shot off the crossbar from 14 yards straight out from the left post.
UMary's final scoring attempt came in the 65
th minute on a shot by
Dina Polanco that was snared by Winona State goalkeeper Abigail Rounds.
Dilger earned her third clean sheet of the season in four starts, posting two saves.
The Marauders conclude the weekend with a stop at Concordia-St. Paul on Sunday, September 28. Kickoff at Sea Foam Stadium in St. Paul, MN, is 1 pm.
