Last second score stuns Marauders in 1-0 loss to Huskies

BISMARCK, ND – Just moments away from earning their first point in the Northern Sun standings for 2025, the University of Mary women's soccer team instead suffered a heartbreaking loss as visiting St. Cloud State University struck for the lone goal of the game with just 10 seconds remaining in the game.

A scoreless match between two of the top teams in the NSIC for nearly 90 minutes, the Huskies were awarded a throw-in from the far sideline with under 30 seconds to play. Grace Olson played the pass to the top of penalty box. Ellie Primarano gathered the pass, turned left and sent a perfectly placed shot low inside the left post past diving Marauders goalkeeper Wiktoria Slupianek for the decision-maker.

Following a closely played first half that resulted in UMary and SCSU combining for four shots with none on frame, the Marauders gained the offensive momentum for much of the second half. In the first ten minutes, UMary fired a pair of shots and launched two corner kicks. Over the first 27 minutes, UMary had the only four shots placed on frame in the game.

Slupianek turned aside SCSU's first shot on frame of the game when she stoned Olson on a breakaway in the 76th minute. The rebound ended up on the foot of Primerano but she clanked her shot off the right post to keep the game scoreless.

UMary added two more shots on net but SCSU goalkeeper Jaylee Strickland kept the Marauders off the scoreboard, setting up the game's dramatic finish.

The Marauders finished with advantages in shots attempted (11-9) and shots on frame (6-2) while both teams had four corner kicks.

Olivia Gardner put both her shots on frame. Rio Spruenken and Dina Polanco also had two shots each.

In the last meeting between the two teams, UMary (2-3-0 overall, 0-2-0 NSIC) defeated SCSU (3-0-2, 1-0-1 NSIC) in the opening round of the NSIC tournament 2-1 in overtime. In the last seven meetings between the two teams, there have been two draws with the other five matches decided by a single goal.

The Marauders next play a pair of NSIC games on the road, visiting Winona State University on Friday, September 26, and Concordia-St. Paul on Sunday, September 28.
