Third period goals sink #14 Marauders

MANDAN, ND – The University of Mary student section had a good look at all six goals scored in the 2-game series finale between the #14 Marauders and #9 Drury University. Two goals were scored in each period and all went into the net on the North side of the rink. Unfortunately for the Marauders it was the Panthers shooting towards that goal twice to just once for UMary.

Drury scored a pair of goals in both the first and third periods to edge the Marauders 4-2 and earning a weekend sweep of UMary in the process. It's the first time in program history that the Marauders have lost both games of a weekend home series.

Down 2-0 at the end of the first period, the Marauders rallied for two goals in the second to draw even.

Joe Gronholz found the net first for UMary. Parked in front of the Panthers goal, the UMary forward redirected a shot by Matt Scribner past Drury netminder Jozef Kuchaslo to close the deficit to 2-1 at the 11:22 mark.

With time running out in the middle stanza, Matt Scribner blasted a long shot from the top of the right circle to tie the game with 81 seconds left before the second intermission.

Drury broke the tie on a Daniel Beaupre power play goal 5:01 into the third, the first of two DU opportunities with a man advantage in the final period.

Despite firing 15 shots in the third period and applying heavy pressure, the Marauders were unable to find the equalizer before the Panthers scored into an empty net with 70 seconds to play.

UMary (1-2-0-0-0-0 W-L-OTL-T-SOW-SOL) finished with a 39-35 edge in shots. The Panthers (6-0-0-0-0-0) connected on 1-of-4 power play opportunities while the Marauders were 0-for-2.

Zane Clausen stopped 31 of the 34 shots he faced in the game. Kuchaslo turned aside 37 of 39.

The Marauders -game home stand to start the season continues with a visit from the University of Colorado on Friday and Saturday, September 26-27. The puck drops between the Marauders and Buffaloes at 7 pm Friday and 5 pm Saturday at the Starion Sports Complex Schwan Cadillac Rink.
