Gensch tallies lone Marauders goal in road loss to Hornets

EMPORIA, KS – Continuing to display a knack for finding the net, Rachel Gensch scored the lone goal of the game for the University of Mary women's soccer team in a 3-1 loss at Emporia State University. The non-conference clash was the first meeting between the Marauders and the Hornets outside of Bismarck, ND, and the first time ESU has beaten UMary in three meetings.

Gensch, who scored the Marauders game-winning goal in a 2-0 victory over MSU Billings, has now scored in both UMary matches this season. The senior forward from Rocklin, CA, owns two goals this season and five goals in 13 career games with the Marauders.

Emporia State jumped out early with a pair of goals less than three minutes apart. After scoring on a penalty kick at 10:55, the Hornets scored again at 13:40 to take a commanding 2-0 lead. Another goal by ESU in the 43rd minute provided the home team a 3-0 lead at intermission.

Limited to three shots in the first half, the Marauders came out of halftime on fire. Less than a minute into the second half, Gensch had her first shot of the stanza turned aside before scoring in the 48th minute off a feed from Maicee Burke.

The Marauders placed significant pressure on the Hornets goal the rest of the half but couldn't close the gap. UMary ripped off nine shots to four for Emporia State and held a massive 7-0 edge in corner kicks over the final 45 minutes.

For the game ESU held the edge in shots (15-12) and shots on frame (8-5) while UMary generated all seven corner kicks taken in the contest. Both teams were called for six fouls.

Gensch and Olivia Gardner both led the Marauders with three shot attempts. All three of Gensch's shots were placed on frame.

The Marauders slip to 1-1-0 overall this season. The Hornets pick up their first win and improve to 1-2-0.

UMary wraps up its visit to the Sunflower State with a non-conference match at Washburn University in Topeka, KS, on Sunday, September 14. Kickoff is 1 pm.
