Polanco powers visiting Marauders past powerhouse Ichabods 4-0

TOPEKA, KS – Facing one of the top programs in the Midwest, the visiting University of Mary women's soccer team rolled over Washburn University 4-0 as freshman Dina Polanco delivered a pair of devastating blows for the Marauders in the first eight minutes of play.
 
The final non-conference match of 2025 for UMary (2-1-0 overall), this was the first-ever meeting between the Marauders and the Ichabods (1-2-1). Washburn is the two-time defending Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association regular season champion and has also made the NCAA tournament the last two years.
 
A midfielder from Guatemala, Polanco wasted no time making an impact for the Marauders. Just 6:05 into the match, Polanco rifled a shot high into the left corner for a quick 1-0 lead for UMary. It was the first shot taken in the match.
 
UMary kept the pressure coming. Following a corner kick by the Marauders, a foul was called on the Ichabods and UMary was awarded a penalty kick. Just 85 seconds after the opening goal, Polanco delivered again for UMary, converting the penalty kick for a 2-0 lead.
 
Polanco, who scored off a free kick in the Marauders opening-day 2-0 win over visiting MSU Billings, now has three goals just three games into her UMary career.
 
The Marauders pulled away from the Ichabods with a pair of goals from their two senior All-Northern Sun forwards in the first 15 minutes of the second half. Olivia Gardner found the net in the 50th minute of play before MaLiah Burke closed out the scoring with a counter in the 60th minute. It was the first goal of the year for both Gardner and Burke.
 
UMary held the edge in shots attempted (11-8) and shots on frame (6-3) while both teams managed four corner kicks and committed eight fouls.
 
Kadyn Dilger earned her second clean sheet this season in three games. The sophomore in her first season starting in frame for UMary turned aside all three shots she faced in the game.
 
The Marauders next open Northern Sun action on Friday, Sept. 19, when UMary hosts #4 Minnesota State University. Game time is 3 pm at the MDU Resources.
