Mischel, Retuta shine as Marauders fall to the Wolves

BISMARCK, ND – Ariana Retuta and Kelsey Mischel combined for nine hits as the University of Mary softball team (9-32, 2-14 Northern Sun) fell 7-0, 14-9 in a doubleheader against Northern State University (10-29, 4-14 NSIC).

UMary heads to St. Paul, MN, to take on Concordia-St. Paul in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 12, at noon.

GAME 1 Northern State University 7 University of Mary 0

NSU took control of the game in the top of the second inning, scoring four runs. The Wolves added two runs in the fourth inning and one in the seventh, winning the game 7-0.

Maddison Hunter extended her hitting streak to nine games after recording a single to the pitcher. Jaylen Rojas pitched 3.1 innings of relief and struck out two batters while only allowing one run.

UMary recorded eight hits and three walks, while NSU had 12 hits and no walks.

GAME 2 Northern State University 14 University of Mary 9

Kelsey Mischel was the star of the game for the Marauders. The Bismarck, ND, native collected four hits, three of which were extra-base hits.

The Wolves opened the game with seven runs in the top of the first inning. The Marauders responded with three runs in the bottom of the first.

Mischel came around to score after a sacrifice fly hit to right field by Janelle Bergmann was dropped. Genevieve Hastings singled to right center to score Bergmann and Madison Hunter.

NSU took a 9-3 lead after scoring two runs in the top of the second inning. UMary scored a run in the bottom of the second inning. Ariana Retuta doubles down the left-field line to score Mischel. The Wolves scored one run in the top of the third, increasing their lead to 10-4.

The Marauders exploded for four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to make it a 10-8 ballgame. Janelle Bergmann smashed a three-run triple to right-center field, scoring Ariana Retuta, Emma Kimberling and Mischel. Jenel Mallari hit a single to center field to score Bergmann.

The Wolves added three runs in the sixth inning and one in the seventh. Mischel hit her fourth hit of the game with a triple in the seventh inning. Hunter would hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Mischel. The Marauders would not score again, securing a 14-9 victory for NSU.

UMary posted 11 hits and three walks, while NSU had 17 hits and three walks.
