Marauders lose to Warriors in rain-delayed doubleheader

WINONA, MN – After a two-hour rain delay, the University of Mary softball team (9-36, 2-18 Northern Sun) fell 2-1, 8-0 in a doubleheader to Winona State University (34-10, 15-4 NSIC).

UMary heads to Crookston, MN, to compete against the University of Minnesota Crookston on Friday, April 18, in a doubleheader at noon.

The Warriors grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The score stayed at 1-0 until the top of the seventh inning.

Kelsey Mischel led off the seventh with a double to left center field. Jenel Mallari then drove Mischel to third after hitting a flyball to right field. A sacrifice fly hit to center field by Genevieve Hastings scored Mischel to even the score.

WSU walked the game off when Indigo Fish hit a single up the middle with the bases loaded to win the game for the Warriors.

UMary recorded five hits and no walks, while WSU had nine hits and two walks. Arria Johnson pitched a complete game for the Marauders. Johnson went 6.2 innings and allowed two runs while striking out four batters.

The bats struggled in game two for the Marauders as Francesca Villaneda had the only hit for UMary in the top of the fifth inning. Villaneda went 1-for-1 with one walk. Hailey Altenhof was the only other Marauder to reach base as she walked in the top of the fourth.

The Warriors took a 3-0 in the bottom of the first inning and extended it to 5-0 in the second. WSU scored three runs in the fifth inning to finish the game at 8-0 after five.

The Marauders finished the game with one hit and two walks, while the Warriors had 11 hits and six walks.
