MANKATO, MN – An excellent pitching performance by true freshman Elyssa Verploegen was not enough for the University of Mary softball team (9-26, 2-8 Northern Sun) as the Marauders lost their doubleheader (8-0, 2-1) to Minnesota State University, Mankato (24-12, 8-2 NSIC).
UMary travels to Moorhead, MN, to challenge Minnesota State University Moorhead in a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 1, at 1 pm.

MSU took a 2-0 lead at the end of the second inning. A solo home run in the third inning gave the Mavericks a 3-0 advantage. MSU finished the game off with five runs in the fifth inning to win 8-0.
The Marauders recorded three hits and one walk, while the Mavericks had ten hits and four walks.

Elyssa Verploegen had the best start of her collegiate career. Verploegen pitched a complete game and allowed zero earned runs while striking out three batters.
The Marauders grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Janelle Bergmann smacked a double to left field to bring home Madison Hunter.
An error in the bottom of the fifth inning led to two runs scoring for the Mavericks. The Marauders struggled to hit with runners in scoring position as UMary left nine runners on base.
MSU kept the UMary from scoring in the final two innings to secure a 2-1 victory. The Marauders posted 11 hits and no walks, while the Mavericks had six hits and two walks.
