Marauders fall in hard-fought doubleheader to the Dragons

JAMESTOWN, ND – A hard-fought doubleheader saw the University of Mary softball team (9-28, 2-10 Northern Sun) fall 4-3, 8-5 to Minnesota State University Moorhead (12-27, 8-2 NSIC).

UMary returns home to welcome Augustana University to the UMary Softball Field on Saturday, April 5, at noon.

The Marauders took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Madison Hunter doubled to left-center field to score Sariah Perez. Ariana Retuta then singled home Hunter. Janelle Bergmann came around to score after Francesca Villaneda reached on an error.

MSUM scored one run in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it a 3-1 ballgame. The Dragons took control of the game in the sixth inning, scoring three runs to take a 4-3 lead.

Janelle Bergmann hit a two-out triple in the seventh inning, but UMary failed to score. The Marauders recorded seven hits and two walks, while the Dragons had six hits and one walk.

The Dragons grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. MSUM added one run in the third inning and four in the fourth.

Kelsey Mischel scored on a wild pitch in the fifth inning to make the score 6-1. The Marauders rallied four runs in the top of the sixth inning to cut the MSUM lead to one.

Ariane Sims smacked a single through the left side, scoring Emma Kimberling and Janelle Bergmann. Sims then came home to score after Mischel reached an error. Jenel Mallari then roped a double to left center field to bring home Mischel.

A two-run inside-the-park home run by the Dragons increased their lead to 8-5 in the bottom of the sixth. Bergmann smashed a triple with one out in the seventh inning. The Marauders failed to capitalize on the triple as the game finished with an 8-5 Dragons win.

UMary posted nine hits and four walks, while MSUM had 13 hits and two walks.
