Marauders fall in doubleheader to the Tigers

HAYS, KS –The University of Mary softball team (7-16) fell 12-4, 13-2 in their doubleheader to Fort Hays State University (16-6).

The Marauders return on Monday, March 17, for a doubleheader against the University of Nebraska at Kearney in Kearney, NE.

FHSU opened the bottom of the first inning with five runs to take an early lead. Janelle Bergmann made it a 5-1 ballgame when she hit her third home run of the season over the left field wall in the top of the second inning.

The Tigers extended their lead to 10-1 after scoring two runs in the third inning and three in the fourth. UMary showed grit by scoring three runs in the top of the fifth to make the score 10-4.

Sariah Perez singled up the middle to bring home Jenel Mallari. Emma Kimberling smacked a single to right-center field to score Kelsey Mischel and Ariane Sims.

FHSU scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to end the game at 12-4 after five innings.

UMary recorded seven hits and no walks, while FHSU had 16 hits and three walks.

UMary jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Francesca Villaneda singled home Ariana Retuta to kick open the scoring. The Tigers erupted for three runs in the third inning and 10 runs in the fourth to take a 13-1 lead.

The Marauders got a run back in the top of the fifth inning when Villaneda hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Sariah Perez. That would not be enough as FHSU did not surrender another run, winning 13-2 after five innings.

UMary posted seven hits and no walk, while the Tigers had 13 hits and three walks.
