Marauders come up short in doubleheader to the Lopers

KEARNEY, NE – The University of Mary softball team (7-18) dropped their doubleheader 8-0, 7-4 to the University of Nebraska at Kearney (15-14).

The Marauders host their first home games of the season in a doubleheader against the University of Sioux Falls on Saturday, March 22, at the University of Mary softball field at noon.

The Marauders struggled with the bats in game one, leaving five runners on base after recording two hits and three walks. The Lopers finished the game with eight hits and five walks.

UNK scored three runs in the first inning and one run in the next five innings to win the game 8-0.

The Marauders struck out five batters and the Lopers struck out six.

UMary grabbed an early lead after scoring four runs in the top of the second inning. Katelyn Falk smoked a single to left field to score Ivee Johnsen and Genevieve Hastings. Emma Kimberling then hit her own single to left field to bring home Kelsey Mischel and Falk.

The lead would not last as the Lopers scored three runs in the third inning and one in the fourth to tie the game at 4-4. UNK took a 7-4 lead with two runs in the fifth inning and an insurance run in the sixth. UMary put the leadoff runner on in the top of the seventh inning but failed to score.

The Marauders finished the game with five hits and four walks, while the Lopers had 10 hits and eight walks.
