MINNETONKA, MN – Clutch performances throughout the lineup lifted the University of Mary baseball team to a series sweep over Concordia-St. Paul. After taking two games from the Golden Bears on Thursday, the Marauders turned the trick again on Friday.
Jaxon Zanolli and
Konnor Kirchoffner held the Golden Bears to two hits in a 2-1 win in the opener before
Isaac Pegors hit a 2-run double in the 11
th inning of a 10-9 victory in the nightcap.
GAME 1: University of Mary 2 Concordia-St. Paul 1
Jaxon Zanolli delivered a masterful performance on the mound and
Isaac Pegors delivered in the clutch at the plate as the Marauders edged past the Golden Bears 2-1.
UMary opened the scoring in the first on a
Noah Hull run scoring single pulled through the right side of the infield to plate
Hank Griffin. CSP evened the score in the third on a fielder's choice ground out, the last run the home team scored in the game.
Hull sparked the Marauders in the sixth with a single to center before taking second on an error by the center fielder. Advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, Hull scored on a Pegors single to center.
Zanolli was dominant following the CSP run in the third. After giving up a leadoff double in the fourth, the junior lefthander retired 11 straight hitters before issuing a walk in the sixth.
The seventh inning started impressively for Zanolli with a strikeout. After a fielding error allowed the next hitter to reach, Zanolli was forced to come out of the game due to injury. Suddenly inserted into the game, Kirchoffner walked the first batter he faced and a steal and a wild pitch placed runners on the corners.
Kirchoffner induced a ground ball from the next batter that Hull scooped up at first. Demonstrating why he was selected to the NSIC All-Defensive team last spring, Hull fired the ball to catcher
Cru Walker to cut down the potential tying run at the plate. A balk followed to place a pair of runners in scoring position before Kirchoffner popped up the next batter to Hull in foul territory for the final out.
Zanolli struck out six and allowed one run on two hits and two walks in 6.1 innings for his second win of the season. It was the third straight game a UMary starting pitcher went at least six innings.
Kirchoffner earned his second save of the season. Hull and Pegors both finished 2-for-3 with an RBI. Hull also scored a run.
Ian Senga allowed one run on two hits with seven strikeouts in five inning of work for Concordia-St. Paul.
GAME 2: UMary 10 CSP 9 (11 innings)
Game two was another nailbiter for the Marauders. Scheduled for nine innings, the contest included five lead changes and a tie.
The Marauders opened the scoring with single runs in the second and third innings. The Golden Bears scored three times in the third for their first lead of the series. Immediately UMary regained the lead in the fourth on a Pegors single and a
Marcus Butts sacrifice fly.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Golden Bears scored three more runs to move back in front 6-4.
UMary faced a 7-4 deficit entering the eighth inning.
Bryce Leafgren cracked a 2-run home run to right field and the Marauders tied the game on a
Hank Griffin ground out that scored Pegors.
The Golden Bears nearly claimed the win in the 10
th inning but Hull again threw out a runner attempting to score from third on a ground ball, this time with Butts applying the tag.
The Marauders took advantage of a major mistake by the Golden Bears in the 11
th inning.
Kalem Haney drove a ball to left center into a swirling wind. With a new center fielder in the game for CSP, the left fielder and center fielder collided, dropping the ball in the process for a double by Haney.
Kieran Gaffney immediately singled home Haney for the lead. Following a single by Hull and an intentional walk, Pegors pulled a 2-run double down the left field line for a 10-7 UMary lead.
Not fading away, Trett Joles hit a 2-run home run for the Golden Bears to close the gap to one run.
Sam Hayen closed out the game for his third save by returning three of the next four hitters, striking out all-region performer Bennett McCollow for the final out.
Pegors led the Marauders 15-hit attack with four. He hit two doubles, scored three times and drove in three runs.
Overall eight Marauders had hits with five posting two or more. Haney, Hull, Leafgren and
Krece Papierski all had two hits. Leafgren scored twice and drove in two runs. Hull scored twice. Griffin had two RBIs.
The Marauders middle relief corps was stellar. Four relievers combined to limit CSP to a single run in seven innings after the Golden Bears claimed a 6-4 lead.
Jacob Burgess pitched two hitless, scoreless innings.
Cole Smith gave up one run in two innings.
Archer Blumenschein struck out two and walked one in one scoreless inning.
Riley Pearce earned the win with two scoreless and hitless innings. He walked two batters and struck out one.
UMary improves to 8-9 overall and 4-4 in the NSIC. The Golden Bears are 6-11 and 2-6.
The Marauders next visit Winona State University in a four-game NSIC set March 21-22.
