SIOUX FALLS, SD – Another big day by University of Mary starting pitchers
Aiden Johnson and
Ryan Chamberlain combined with a 2-run home run in each game by
Isaac Pegors carried the Marauders to their third straight doubleheader sweep. In a series moved from Winona, MN, to Sioux Falls, SD, due to inclement weather, UMary routed Winona State University 11-3 in the opener before rallying for a 7-5 win in game two.
The Marauders improved their win streak to six games. UMary is 10-9 overall this season and 6-4 in the Northern Sun. The Warriors are 8-9 and 5-5.
The UMary-Winona State continues at 12 noon on Saturday, March 22, at the Sanford Sports Complex in Sioux Falls, SD.
GAME 1: University of Mary 11 Winona State University 3
UMary scored the first ten runs of the game and
Aiden Johnson held Winona State to three hits as the Marauders rolled to an 11-3 win in the series opener.
The Marauders started fast. After run-scoring singles by
Kieran Gaffney and
Noah Hull,
Isaac Pegors slammed a 2-run home run to right field for a quick 4-0 lead after the top of the first inning. Another four runs in the second and two more in the third provided UMary an insurmountable 10-0 lead.
Johnson limited the Warriors to three hits and one earned run in six innings. He struck out five and walked just one to earn his third win. This was his fourth straight game in which he pitched at least six innings. In his last three starts covering 18 innings, Johnson has held opponents to 10 hits and five runs.
The left side of the infield had a big day at the plate. Haney, the Marauders shortstop, and third baseman Gaffney both were 3-for-4 in the game. Haney scored three times and drove in one. Gaffney drove in three runs and scored twice.
Both Hull and Haney had a double and a triple. Hull scored twice and posted two RBIs.
Eight Marauders had hits and seven scored runs.
GAME 2: UMary 7 WSU 5
Facing the reigning national pitcher of the week, the Warriors struck for three runs in the top of the first inning off
Ryan Chamberlain. It wouldn't be enough for Winona State as Chamberlain and the Marauders turned the tables starting in the second inning.

Marcus Butts double and a
Hank Griffin single both drove in runs in the second for the Marauders. UMary claimed the lead in the third on a 2-run home run by
Isaac Pegors, his second of the day. Two unearned runs in the seventh inning pushed UMary's lead to 6-3.
With the Marauders offense carving out a lead, Chamberlain, who pitched a 9-inning 3-hit 10-strikeout complete game shutout in his previous outing, returned to form. The junior righthanded from Laramie, WY, pitched six straight shutout innings after allowing three runs in the first.
Chamberlain pitched four perfect innings out of his last six and allowed just three hits during this span. He retired the last seven batters he faced in the game.
For the day Chamberlain allowed three runs on six hits, walking two and striking out five for his second victory of the season.
The Warriors closed within a run after scoring twice in the eighth inning. After
Mikey Ramirez doubled home Butts in the top of the 9
th inning to give UMary a 7-5 lead,
Sam Hayen came in to pitch the bottom of the inning. Retiring the first two batters he faced, Hayen allowed a single and a walk before inducing a ground ball for the final out of the game to earn his team-leading 4
th save of the season.
Butts scored three times and had a double among his two hits. He also had an RBI. Griffin had two hits and drove in two runs.
Krece Papierski scored twice.
Dylan Harer led the Warriors with three hits and two RBIs.
