Late comeback falls short in Marauders 67-65 defeat to MSUM

MOORHEAD, MN – A strong fourth-quarter comeback fell short for the University of Mary women's basketball team (13-9, 10-8 NSIC) in their 67-65 defeat to Minnesota State University Moorhead (12-12, 10-8 NSIC).

The Marauders trailed by as many as 13 in the fourth quarter before slowly beginning to chip away at the MSUM lead. A three by Bergan Kinnebrew with just over a minute remaining would cut the Dragons lead to 64-62. After UMary got a stop on the next possession, Ryleigh Wacha would start a fast break that led to a Chloe Pfau three to give the Marauders a 65-54 lead with 21 seconds remaining.

A foul called on UMary with 15 seconds left sent Abby Berge to the line, where she made both free throws to give MSUM a one-point lead. Kinnebrew got a great look at the basket, but the ball rimmed in and out as the Dragons regained possession with two seconds left.

MSUM would go 1-of-2 at the line to give the Dragons a 67-65 lead. UMary failed to get a shot off before time expired to end the game.

Kinnebrew led all scorers with 24 points. She also grabbed four rebounds and two steals. Wacha recorded 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field. Wacha also brought down six rebounds and earned four steals.

Chloe Pfau had ten points on the night, and Addison Rozell grabbed nine boards. Moriku Hakim came off the bench to post seven points and five rebounds.

UMary took a 19-17 lead at the end of the first quarter as the team shot 47% from the field.  The Marauders would lead 34-31 going into halftime.

The third quarter was rough for UMary as MSUM outscored the Marauders 26-12 to take a 57-46 lead. Despite holding the Dragons to one field goal made in the fourth quarter, the UMary comeback would come up short.

The Marauders shot 24-of-60 (40%) from the field and 8-of-26 (30.8%) from three, while the Dragons went 25-of-55 (45.5%) from the floor and 7-of-19 (36.8%) from behind the arc.

UMary shot 9-of-13 (87%) from the free-throw line, while MSUM went 10-of-13 (76.9%) from the charity stripe. The Marauders won the turnover battle, committing ten to the Dragons 16. MSUM dominated the glass, outrebounding UMary 41-30.

The Marauders head to Winona, MN, on Friday, February 14, to challenge Winona State University at 7:30 pm.
