JAMESTOWN, ND – In a rollercoaster double overtime road game, the University of Mary men's basketball team dropped a 99-91 decision to the University of Jamestown. Led by
Kelton Coleman's career-high 22 points, five Marauders reached double figures in the first Northern Sun meeting between the two schools located 100 miles apart along 1-94.
Playing their first road game at the University of Jamestown since January 13, 2006, and their first conference game since 2005 when both schools competed in the Dakota Athletic Conference, the Marauders came out on fire, connecting on eight of their first ten 3-point attempts. Trailing by as many as eight points, UMary used a 28-8 run to gain a 12-point lead before entering intermission with a 53-43 advantage.
Consecutive treys by
Cayden Redfield and
Tshawn Bois pushed the Marauders lead to 69-50 with 10:47 to play, the largest advantage for either team in the game. The Jimmies proceeded to chip away at the Marauders advantage before tying the game at 78-78 with 31 seconds left in regulation on a pair of Anthony Walters free throws.
The first overtime featured five lead changes with UMary pulling ahead for the last time on
Tamarrein Henderson's trey with 65 seconds on the clock for an 88-86 lead. Once again Jamestown kept the game going with a late basket, this time a jumper by Owen Hektner with 33 seconds to play.
In the second overtime, Walters pushed the Jimmies out front by scoring the first four points of the final five minutes. A
Jackson Ware tip-in pulled UMary within 92-90 but Walters responded with a jumper and Ford Okehi drilled a trey to push the Jimmies to a 97-90 lead that the Marauders were unable to overcome.
This is the longest game UMary has played since defeating the University of Minnesota Duluth 100-98 in triple overtime on January 11, 2019, in Duluth, MN.
Coleman finished with 22 points with six steals. He also had four rebounds and three assists.
Redfield came off the bench to score 12 points, making 5-of-6 shots overall and 3-of-3 behind the arc. Bois and
Noah Thomas also provided punch off the bench as the duo scored 10 points each. Bois had three treys and five rebounds while Thomas hit two triples.
Amare Jackson scored nine off the bench.
Henderson chipped in 11 points for UMary as he hit three treys.
Walters and Ford both had 25 points and seven rebounds for the Jimmies. Hektner added 14 points and a matching seven boards.
In a game that featured six ties and 12 lead changes, UMary shot 48.6% from the floor and 46.4% on treys, making 13-of-28 from behind the arc. Jamestown made 44.4% of its shots and went 10-of-26 on treys. The Jimmies had a big advantage at the free throw line, making 25-of-31 to 6-of-16 for UMary, and in rebounding (52-32).
The Marauders return home for a pair of home game games, hosting the University of Minnesota Crookston on Thursday, December 11, at 5:30 pm, and MSU Moorhead on Saturday, December 13, at 3:30 pm.
