BISMARCK, ND – A relentless defensive effort for a full 40 minutes drove the University of Mary men's basketball team to a 79-54 win over visiting University of Minnesota Crookston in Northern Sun play. It was the fewest points allowed in a game this season by the Marauders as UMary picked up its second Northern Sun win of the season.
Jackson Ware scored a season-high 16 points for the Marauders. The junior forward knocked down three of UMary's seven treys in the game and added eight rebounds. One of 11 Marauders to score in the game, the native of Australia also added a block and an assist in just 23 minutes of play.
Tshawn Bois added 15 points to provide a big boost for the Marauders off the bench. The junior guard from Quebec, Canada, hit a pair of treys and was 6-of-10 overall from the field. Bois led UMary in rebounds with nine. Overall the Marauders held a 51-41 edge in rebounding over the Golden Eagles.
UMary took control of the game early. Down by two, back-to-back layups by
Alex Dvorak and Bois kicked off a 15-1 run to give the Marauders a lead they would never relinquish. Ware finished off the run with a free throw before hammering home a dunk over the UMC defenders.
The Marauders (3-6 overall, 2-2 NSIC/NSIC North) entered intermission leading 33-18. The Golden Eagles (1-8 overall, 0-4 NSIC/NSIC North) managed to cut their deficit to 11 points but could never close the gap to single digits. UMary grew its lead to as many as 32 points on back-to-back treys by
Parker Brodina and Dvorak.
UMary held UMC to a shooting percentage of just 25.7% for the game, including a 3-for-25 effort from behind the arc. The Golden Eagles came into the game making nearly ten treys a contest.
The Marauders shot 45.9% overall from the floor and made 7-of-23 3-point attempts. UMary finished 16-of-26 at the free throw line while UMC was 15-of-21.
UMary took advantage of its rebounding edge to outscore UMC 18-5 on second chance points and 40-30 in the paint. The Marauders also held a 45-24 edge in points off the bench.
Kelton Colemen scored 10 points with two steals to give the Marauders a third person in double digits for points.
Amare Jackson added eight points and Dvorak and Brodina both added seven.
Kazadi Mukoma Jr. paced UMC with 10 points. Donez Lindsey added nine points and five steals. Alijah Washington snared nine rebounds.
The Marauders next host MSU Moorhead on Saturday, December 13. Tip off is 3:30 pm at the McDowell Activity Center in the final UMary home game prior to Christmas.
