BILLINGS, MT – A career-night for
Bergan Kinnebrew helped lead the University of Mary women's basketball team (1-0) to an impressive 81-71 win over Montana State University Billings (0-1) in their season opener on day one of the Tip Off Classic at the Trailhead.
This victory is historic for head coach
Rick Neumann, who achieves his 200th career win. Neumann is second all-time in wins at UMary, trailing Roger Haug (234) for most all-time.
Kinnebrew scored 36 points, surpassing her previous career-high of 28 from last season. The Bismarck, ND, native shot 9-of-19 from the field, 3-of-6 from three, and a perfect 9-of-9 from the free throw line. She also added six rebounds, two steals, and one block.
Chloe Pfau recorded 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the floor and went 5-of-10 from behind the arc. Pfau also had five steals against the Yellowjackets, which ties her career-high.
In her first collegiate start,
Allison Undlin posted a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. The Mohall, ND, native dominated the paint with four blocks to lead all players.
Anna Lenzen scored six points while adding two blocks and two assists.
Eden Fridley dished out five assists and grabbed four boards.
Cassie Erickson scored five points off the bench.
UMary struggled offensively in the first half, shooting 31.4% from the field. The Marauders defense helped keep them in the game as they trailed 30-32 at halftime.
Kinnebrew exploded for 21 points in the third quarter to help lead UMary to a 58-55 lead over MSUB. Two three-pointers to open the fourth quarter by
Chloe Pfau helped extend the Marauders lead to nine. Big plays by Kinnebrew, Erickson, and Lenzen helped secure an 81-71 victory for UMary.
The Marauders shot 25-of-61 (41%) from the field and 8-of-24 (33.3%) from behind the arc, while the Yellowjackets went 35-of-75 (39.4%) from the floor and 3-of-17 (17.6%) from three.
UMary shot 23-of-26 (88.5%) from the free-throw line, while MSUB went 16-of-21 (76.2%) from the charity stripe. The Marauders lost the rebounding battle 44-34 to the Yellowjackets.
UMary returns for day two of the Tip Off Classic against #20 University of Texas at Tyler on Saturday, November 8, at 8:30 pm.
