MANDAN, ND – Delivering the biggest goal of his short University of Mary career, defenseman
Amraj Gill scored with 90 seconds remaining in the game as the 12
th ranked Marauders downed 3
rd ranked Minot State University 2-1.
This is just the Marauders second win over the Beavers since moving to ACHA Men's Division 1 in the 2023-24 season. The victory snapped an 8-game losing streak against UMary's Highway 83 rival.
UMary improves to 10-5-0-0-0-0 (W-L-OTL-T-SOW-SOL) overall, 9-5-0-0-0-0 against ACHA MD1 teams and 3-2-0-0-0-0 in Midwest College Hockey play. Additionally the Marauders are 7-5-0-0-0-0 when playing nationally-ranked teams. Minot State falls to 7-1-1-0-0-0 overall.
In a closely contested Midwest College Hockey opening period the Beavers took advantage of a 4-on-3 power play to score with just 1:19 remaining in the first 20 minutes.
Taking advantage of another power play opportunity, the Marauders pulled even at 1-1 at 3:07 of the second period. Skating with the puck at the left point just inside the blue line,
David Loahr drove closer to the net and unleashed shot from just outside the top of the left circle. Taking advantage of a screen from
Derek Dropik, Loahr's shot found the lower left side of the net just inside the post for the only goal of the middle stanza.
The Marauders lived dangerously and survived in the third period. Down two skaters for 71 seconds after taking a pair of penalties 49 seconds apart, UMary killed off the 5-on-3 power play and another 49 seconds of a 5-on-4 opportunity for Minot State to remain deadlocked.
With time running low, the Marauders chased the puck into the right corner. The Beavers attempted to clear the puck but Gill picked the puck up just inside the blue line. Taking a long shot from the point, Gill's shot through a screen evaded Beavers goalie Will Dyke to his glove side and inside the right post for the game-winning goal.
This is Gill's first season at UMary.
The Marauders penalty kill unit was impressive all game, holding the Beavers to one goal in five opportunities. UMary finished 1-for-3 with a man advantage.
Caleb Cross had a spectacular night in net. He turned aside 38 of the 39 shots he faced in the game. Dyke finished with 25 saves.
The Marauders next open a 7-game road trip with three games in Romeoville, IL, on November 20-22, with games against Delaware, Utah and West Chester.
