Early Senior Day lead fades late for Marauders

BISMARCK, ND – The University of Mary scored the first 19 points of the Marauders Senior Day game and Karsyn Jablonski scored the program's longest receiving touchdown of the NCAA era before Winona State University roared back in the fourth quarter to edge UMary 36-29.

Prior to kickoff, UMary honored 23 seniors as 21 players and two cheer team members performed for the last time at the Bowl. Celebrated for their contributions to the Marauders were players Luke Bodine, Jaxon Feller, Kalani Washington, Jaylen Martin, Sam Logoai, Jordan Polo Solomon, Damani Wilks, Tuakoi Mahe, Ryan Piepgras, BJ Phillips, Derrian Brown, Mason Phillips, Quintin Ashford, Chris Taylor, Andres Finlayson, Tofa Wilson, Lane Caraballo, Leo Togia, Timo Shively Asoau Fua, Ian Kopf, and Adam Knowles. Cheer team seniors are Sophia DeRaad and Olivia Callens.

The pregame festivities carried to nearly halftime for the Marauders. The scoring started early for UMary as the Marauders scored on the opening possession of the game, driving 72 yards on seven plays. Wilks scored the opening touchdown on an 8 yard pass from Polo Solomon.

A tackle by Vegas George on a Winona State 4th-and-1 attempt turned the ball right back over to the UMary offense at the Winona State 35. Striking quickly, a 23 yard catch by Jablonski and a 22 yard reception by Lucas Gonzales set up a 20 yards touchdown catch for Bodine and a 13-0 UMary lead.

Two possessions later the Marauders scored again. Using Polo Solomon passes of 27 yards to Wilks and 33 yards to Jablonski set up a 4 yard TD pass from the senior signal caller to Jablonski.

After the two teams traded interceptions the Warriors got on the scoreboard with 1:47 to play in the first half on a Jahmani Muhammed 33 yard run. Winona State had one more chance to score after driving to the UMary 25 before the half ended on a Mason Phillips sack.

Muhammed opened the second half with a 1 yard touchdown run for the Warriors to close the gap to 19-14.

Jack Henninger nailed a 31 yard field goal with 3:48 to play in the third to give UMary a 22-14 edge.

Following another defensive stop, the Marauders took over at their own 3 yard line after a 47 yard punt for the Warriors and a holding penalty.

With the Marauders end zone 97 yards away, what looked like a daunting distance to cover took just 13 seconds to traverse.

Taking the shotgun snap in the end zone, Polo Solomon quickly found Jablonski just inside the numbers at the 10 yard line. The Mandan, ND, native quickly broke to the left sidelines, shaking off one tackler before hitting the corner at full speed. Racing past the Winona State bench, Jablonski left numerous Warriors in his wake as he jetted down the sidelines for a 97 yard touchdown reception and a 29-14 UMary lead with 75 seconds left in the third quarter.

The Marauders previous long NCAA touchdown reception covered 93 yards when Blair Sandy found Mike Williams on November 10, 2007, against Northern State University in the Metrodome.

The Warriors responded with a 32 yard touchdown pass from Jackson Flottmeyer to James Durst at 13:32 of the fourth quarter.

Taking advantage of a pair of pass interference calls, including one on a 4th-and-10 play, the Warriors tied the game 29-29 on a 2 yard run by Flottmeyer and a 2-point conversion to Durst with 6:54 to play. Flottmeyer then gave the Warriors their first lead of the day at 36-29 on a 3 yard run with 68 seconds left in the game, capping the Winona State rally.

Jablonski set a career-high with 186 yards receiving on seven catches. He tied his career-best with two touchdown catches.

Bodine added seven catches for 92 yards, including his 9th touchdown of the year. Wilks had five grabs for 78 yards and a score.

Polo Solomon also had a career day with 385 yards passing and four touchdowns. He competed 23-of-38 passes.

Feller finished with 155 yards of all-purpose yards, including a 43 yard kick return.

Tuakoi Mahe spearheaded the Marauders defense with 3.5 tackles for loss and an interception. He also led UMary with 10 tackles (nine solo). Abram Jopp added eight solo tackles and a pass breakup.

Philips was also in the Warriors backfield all day, posting a sack and 2.5 tackles for loss. Christopher Federico added an interception and seven tackles. Christian Arteaga made two tackles behind the line. Camani Cobbs broke up a pair of passes.

Muhammed ran for 95 yards and two scored to lead the Warriors. Flottmeyer passed for 230 yards and a score and he ran for 43 yards and two touchdowns. James Durst caught eight balls for 97 yards and a touchdown.

The Marauders exceeded 400 yards once again, piling up 441 yards with 415 through the air. The Warriors had 395 yards of offense.

UMary is now 4-6 this season and 3-6 in the Northern Sun. Winona State is 5-5 and 5-4.

The Marauders close out the regular season at Bemidji State University on Saturday, November 15. Game time is 1 pm.
