BEMIDJI, MN – Despite dominating the second half run of play, the University of Mary women's soccer team couldn't overcome a first half goal by Bemidji State University in a 1-0 road loss to the Beavers.
The Marauders (2-4-2 overall / 0-3-2 Northern Sun) held a 10-1 advantage in shots over the final 45 minutes and had six shots on frame to zero for the Beavers (5-2-1, 3-1-1). For the game UMary held the advantage in shots (14-5), shots on frame (9-2) and corner kicks (7-3). UMary was also whistled for 15 fouls to nine for Bemidji State.
UMary just missed scoring in the 29
th minute when a
Rio Spruenken shot from distance went off the top of the crossbar. Just over a minute later a long
Dina Polanco shot looked destined for the lower left corner of the net before a diving stop by Beavers goalkeeper Sonia Alfieri prevented a goal.
Taking advantage of a corner kick, the Beavers scored the lone goal of the game in the 35
th minute. Triggered from the right corner by Ella Wade to the far post, Maggie Kramer beat everyone to the ball to knock home a header into the top left corner of the net.
UMary pressed hard throughout the second half but all scoring attempts were thwarted by the Bemidji State defense.
The Marauders nearly broke through in the 78
th minute. Following a yellow card on BSU, a
MaLiah Burke shot from the top right of the goal box appeared to be headed to the left corner of the net before it was turned aside at the goal line by a Bemidji State defender.
Olivia Gardner attempted to tap home the rebound but Alfieri appeared to turn aside the scoring attempt.
The Marauders wrap up their road trip with a visit to the University of Minnesota Duluth on Sunday, October 5, at 12 noon.
