Marauders overwhelm Jimmies 5-0 as Gardner, Polanco both post brace of goals

BISMARCK, ND – The University of Mary women's soccer team posted a third straight dominant performance at home, rolling past the University of Jamestown 5-0. Olivia Gardner and Dina Polanco both posted a brace of goals as the Marauders finished a three-game home stand by outscoring the opposition 14-0.

The Marauders, who defeated Wayne State College 7-0 last Friday and Augustana 2-0 on Sunday, are undefeated over their last four games and 3-1-3 in their last seven games. UMary has allowed just four goals in those seven games and improves to 5-4-3 overall and 3-3-3 in the Northern Sun. Jamestown is 2-9-0 and 2-7-0 in the NSIC.

This was the first time the two teams have played a regular season game since 2006. The meeting is the first Northern Sun contest between the two programs.

Gardner opened the scoring in the 5th minute, taking a pass on the left side of the goal box from MaLiah Burke and tapping the ball into the middle of the goal.

Major pressure by Gardner on the Jimmies goalkeeper Skyler Lind forced a misplay in front of the net. Stealing the ball from Lind at the top of the goal box, Gardner strolled towards the net unhindered to score in the 24th minute.

This is the second time in three games the Marauders all-conference forward has posted two goals in a game. Gardner is second on the team with five goals.

A Polanco header from inside the goal box off a free kick from Chloe Brand increased the UMary lead to 3-0 in the 47th minute.

Tara Young scored her first collegiate goal in the senior defender's 70th game for the Marauders. Crashing the net as Bella Kozlowski centered a pass from the left of the goal, Young tapped home the feed on the goal line into a wide-open net in the 53rd minute. A starter since her freshman year, the team captain had a pair of assists last weekend.

Polanco finished the scoring on a penalty kick in the 63rd minute. Gardner was knocked down in the penalty area and Polanco took advantage, scoring her seventh goal of the season.

In addition to the scoreboard, the Marauders also dominated the stat sheet. UMary held massive advantaged in shots (33-4), shots on frame (12-2), and corner kicks (17-0).

Kadyn Diger, the reigning NSIC Goalkeeper of the Week, earned her third straight clean sheet and sixth of the season after turning aside both of the Jimmies shots on frame.

Lind had seven saves for Jamestown.

The Marauders next visit Northern State University on Sunday, October 19. Kickoff is set for 1 pm in Aberdeen, SD, to open a 3-game road trip for UMary.
