ABERDEEN, SD – Scoring two first half goals for the second straight game and third time in four,
Olivia Gardner provided the University of Mary an early lead. Northern State University proved undeterred by the deficit and stormed back with a big second half to claim a 3-2 win over the visiting Marauders.
The loss snapped UMary's 4-game unbeaten streak and 3-game winning streak. The Marauders are now 5-5-3 overall and 3-4-3 in the Northern Sun. The Wolves are 4-6-3 and 4-3-3.
Taking advantage of a tremendous cross from the end line of the penalty area's right side by
MaLiah Burke to the left post, Gardner buried the pass for a quick UMary lead in the 10
th minute of play.
In the 21
st minute,
Dina Polanco delivered a perfect through ball to spring Gardner free for her second goal of the game. Taking Polanco's feed at full speed towards the left side of the goal box, Garner slid her shot towards the right post and into the net for a 2-0 UMary lead.
Gardner is second on the Marauders in goals scored with seven, trailing Polanco by one. She is also tied for 4
th in the NSIC. The senior team captain from Winona, MN, now has 22 goals in her UMary career. The 2-time All-Northern Sun forward is one goal shy of her single-season high of eight set as a sophomore in 2023.
Northern State found its way offensively in the second half against a UMary defense that had posted three straight shutouts and allowed just four goals in their previous seven games.
The Wolves scored their first goal in the 60
th minute on a perfectly placed ball just inside the right post and past a diving UMary goalkeeper
Kadyn Dilger. A little over three minutes later the Wolves pulled even when Lauren Youngquist scored on a header off a free kick. Northern State completed its rally when Ella Ready scored on a penalty kick in the 69
th minute.
Bottled up by the Wolves defense, the Marauders managed three shots in the last 20 minutes but could only put one shot on frame in the final minutes.
UMary held a slight advantage in shots (11-10) and shots on frame (6-4). Both teams earned just one corner kick while the Marauders were whistled for 14 fouls to nine for the Wolves.
The Marauders continue their 3-game road trip with visits to the University of Sioux Falls on Friday, October 24 and Southwest Minnesota State University on Sunday, October 26.
