Marauders lose 3-2 to Dragons in heartbreaker

BISMARCK, ND – It was a heartbreaking defeat for the University of Mary volleyball team as they fell in five sets (22-25, 22-25, 25-13, 25-23, 16-14) to Minnesota State University Moorhead.

UMary (5-12, 2-7 Northern Sun) recorded 55 kills and 29 errors on a .168 hitting percentage, while UMD (6-10, 0-8 NSIC) posted 63 kills and 29 errors on a .207 attack percentage. The Marauders had 52 assists and seven aces, while the Dragons had 59 assists and eight aces.

The Marauders grabbed an early 7-2 lead in the first set, but the Dragons would cut the lead down to 23-22. A kill by Myra Newman and an attack error by MSUM secured a 25-22 victory for the Marauders.

UMary trailed in the second set 22-20, but the Marauders went on a 5-0 run to win it and take a 2-0 lead in the match.

MSUM dominated the third set, winning 25-13. UMary jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the fourth set. The Dragons rallied back and took a 22-21 lead after an 8-1 run. The Marauders regained the lead after a service error and an attack error by MSUM. The Dragons would win the last three points to win 25-23 and tie the match 2-2.

The fifth and final set went back-and-forth as MSUM held a 13-10 lead. The Marauders showed grit by winning four of the next five points to tie the score at 14-14. The Dragons took down the final two points to win 16-14.

Maddy Freed dished out a season-best 49 assists while also delivering eight digs and three aces.

Judith Burke tied her career-high with 17 kills. Burke also had 13 digs and two blocks.

Katie Bleeker led the team with 21 digs.

Holli Klettheimer had 11 kills on a .318 hitting percentage and four blocks.

Myra Newman had a season-high 11 kills on a .529 attack percentage.

Dani Highum had nine kills, nine digs and three blocks.

Gabby Caskey had six kills and four blocks.
