MARSHALL, MN – A career night by
Moriku Hakim would not be enough for the University of Mary women's basketball team (9-7, 6-6 NSIC) as the Marauders fell 77-68 on the road to #23 Southwest Minnesota State University (16-2, 10-2 NSIC).
Hakim scored a career-high 23 points off the bench on 7-of-10 shooting from the field and 9-of-10 shooting from the free-throw line. Hakim also grabbed 11 rebounds to earn her third double-double of the season.
Chloe Pfau recorded 15 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Bergan Kinnebrew dropped 11 points and three assists.
Addison Rozell had nine rebounds, eight points and two blocks.
The first quarter was competitive as both teams exchanged leads, with UMary ending the quarter with a 12-11 advantage. The second quarter would be the difference as the Mustangs outscored the Marauders 24-15 to take a 35-27 lead heading into halftime.
The third quarter saw SMSU end the quarter on a 7-0 run to take a 59-51 lead. The Marauders got the game within two with 2:53 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Mustangs would finish the game on a 9-2 run to win 77-68.
UMary shot 24-of-58 (41.4%) from the floor and 4-of-20 (20%) from three, while SMSU went 25-of-63 (39.7%) from the field and 6-of-18 (33.3%) from behind the arc.
The Marauders shot 16-of-20 (80%) from the free-throw line, while the Mustangs went 21-of-24 (87.5%) from the charity stripe. UMary won the rebounding battle 39-37 over SMSU.
The Marauders return home on Friday, January 24, at 7:30 pm to host the University of Minnesota Duluth in the McDowell Activity Center.
