CHESTERFIELD, MO – In a meeting between a pair of nationally ranked teams to open the ACHA M1 Showcase, #14 University of Mary couldn't overcome an early deficit in a 4-2 loss to weekend host #11 Maryville University.
The Marauders fall to 17-8-0-0-0-0 (W-L-OTL-T-SOW-SOL) overall and 16-8-0-0-0-0 in ACHA MD1 play. The Saints improve to 13-7-3-0-1-0.
UMary held a 10-7 edge in shots in the first period and held a 2-1 edge in power play opportunities but it was Maryville that scored the only two goals in the first 20 minutes to play. The Saints soon increased their lead to 3-0 at 3:16 of the second period.
Jake Murray got the Marauders on the board at 13:58 of the second to close the gap to 3-1, taking advantage of assists from
Hunter Mangan and
Matt Scribner.
Sam Edwards pushed the Maryville lead back to three goals at 4:52 of the third with his second goal of the game.
Crae Dawson pulled UMary back within two goals when he found the net at 9:33 of the final period but the Marauders failed to score again. Murray provided the lone helper for his second point of the game.
The Marauders held a 34-21 advantage in shots, firing 12 shots on net each of the last two periods.
Marino Ramirez finished with 17 saves for UMary while Parker Salka had 32 for Maryville.
The Saints finished with four power play opportunities to two for the Marauders.
In a quick turnaround after playing Friday night, the Marauders next face West Chester University at 1:30 pm on Saturday, January 18. The weekend wraps up against the University of Central Oklahoma. Faceoff against the Bronchos is 1:30 pm on Sunday, January 18.
