Cunningham delivers overtime winner as #11 UMary downs #18 ISU 5-4 to complete sweep

BLOOMINGTON, IL – Dylan Cunningham picked the perfect time to score his first goal for the University of Mary. The defenseman from Helena, MT, found the back of the net less than a minute into overtime to give the 11th ranked Marauders a 5-4 win and a weekend sweep on the road over #18 Illinois State University on the opening weekend of Midwest College Hockey play.

The Marauders improve to 5-0-0-0-0 overall, 4-0-0-0-0 against American Collegiate Hockey Association Men's Division 1 competition and a 2-0-0-0 record in MCH play. UMary also has won all four games against nationally ranked teams. The Redbirds fall to 0-4-0-0-0 overall and 0-2-0-0-0 in the MCH.

A back and forth game featuring multiple lead changes, big momentum swings and 17 combined power plays, the Marauders trailed 2-1 after the opening period with a goal by Derek Dropik sandwiched between two goals by the Redbirds. Dropik scored a shorthanded goal with 60 seconds left in the period to tie the game but the Redbirds responded with a Jaycob Bland power play goal with 32 seconds on the clock before the first intermission.

The Marauders scored three times to seemingly take control of the match at 4-2 as Nick Bradshaw, David Loahr and Crae Dawson all tallied for UMary in the second period.

The Redbirds rebounded with a big third period. After a power play goal with 9:37 to play, Illinois State found the equalizer with 2:56 to play to force an extra session.

Facing a long drive home after the game, the Marauders needed just 56 seconds to score in overtime. With assists from Dawson and Lyndon Orr, Cunningham kept UMary undefeated on the season with a clutch goal for the 5-4 UMary win.

The Marauders held a 43-34 edge in shots on goal. Marino Ramirez made 30 stops for UMary and Brendan Donovan made 38 saves for ISU.

UMary was unable to convert on any of its nine power play opportunities while ISU scored twice in eight opportunities with an extra skater.

The Marauders return for a trio of home games during homecoming week. UMary hosts Minot State at 7 pm on Wednesday, October 2, before hosting Northern Illinois on Saturday and Sunday, October 5-6.
