#11 Marauders hold off late charge by #18 Redbirds to win MCH opener 2-1

BLOOMINGTON, IL – Goals by Jacob Murray and Lyndon Orr and a clutch performance in net by Marino Ramirez helped #11 University of Mary hold off a late rally by #18 Illinois State in a 2-1 Marauders win over the Redbirds.

This was the Marauders first road game of the season and the Midwest College Hockey opener for both teams. UMary improves to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the MCH. ISU, projected to win the MCH North Division, is 0-3 overall and 0-1 in league play.

Following a scoreless first period, Murray gave the Marauders a 1-0 lead just 3:11 into the second.

Orr doubled the Marauders advantage to 2-0 as he scored with 6:30 left in the game.

The rest of the night was dominated by penalties and power play opportunities for the Redbirds. With just over five minutes left in the game ISU went on the power play and eventually had a 2-skater advantage. With 1:47 left in the game and their advantage about to expire, Jaycob Bland scored a power play goal to cut the UMary lead to 2-1.  Another UMary penalty with 48 seconds left in the game gave ISU another power play opportunity. With ten seconds remaining the Redbirds gained a 2-skater advantage. The Marauders weathered the storm, however, and emerged with an important conference win.

The Marauders finished the game 0-for-4 on the power play as the Redbirds were whistled for seven penalties covering 14 minutes. UMary was cited 10 times for 28 minutes and ISU scored once on six power play opportunities.

Ramirez picked up his third win of the season in net for the Marauders, stopping 41 of the 42 shots he faced in the game, including 18 saves in the third period as ISU outshot UMary 19-9 over the final 20 minutes.

Cole Walter had 35 saves in the game for Illinois State.

The Marauders and Redbirds wrap up the weekend with a 5 pm game on Saturday, September 28.
