LAKE CITY, MN – University of Mary men's golf senior captain
Gavin Argent had a tremendous day at The Jewel in Lake City, MN, hitting six birdies to end the day in third place overall. As a team, the Marauders followed Argent's lead with a strong day 2 to finish the Watkins Invitational in 9
th place.
Argent's score of 67 (-5) today was the lowest for a UMary golfer since Argent's 66 in Phoenix, AZ, in 2022. After hitting a 73 (+1) on day 1, the senior leaped to 3
rd place in a very competitive field that featured 11 golfers finishing under par.
"He was playing with a really good group and had the best chance for birdie all day long," said third-year head coach
Laif Olson. "Just totally outplayed the three other guys. They were all number 1 guys from those different schools. His irons were just fantastic. He hit it great off the tee but his irons were even better. Just gave himself a ton of chances."
Behind Argent were great days from freshman
Quinn Breidenbach (73, +1), sophomore
Evan Booth (75, +3), and sophomore
Aiden Knodel (76, +4). It was a 14 stroke improvement on day 2 for the Marauders, who shot a 291.
"Today was the second lowest 18 hole team score we've ever had," said Olson. "It was a great day. This is a hard golf course so I think of this as our best day ever. It's a tough golf course and we had a bunch of good scores. Between the A team and the B team we had 7 of our 10 guys break 80. On a course like that, that's probably as good as we've ever done."
Olson told his team last night that they needed a strong second day to not fall behind a tightly packed leaderboard. They did just that.

Up next for UMary will be the Marauders Invitational at Hawktree Golf Course in Bismarck, ND. The tournament will take place on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 30 and Oct. 1.
