MOORHEAD, MN – The University of Mary soccer win streak grew to four as a quartet of Marauders scored goals in a 4-0 win at MSU Moorhead. The Marauders dominated the match as UMary launched an incredible 36 shots while limiting the Dragons to nine.
The shutout was the fourth straight for the Marauders, who have allowed just on goal this season in five games. UMary improves its record to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in Northern Sun play following the first weekend of conference play.
MaLiah Burke,
Rio Spruenken and
Olivia Gardner all had a goal and an assist in the match and
Rachel Gensch scored her team-leading third goal of the season.
Attacking pressure by the Marauders right from the kickoff led to an early goal. Playing the ball to the right of the penalty area close to the end line,
Rio Spruenken played a cross to the far side of the goal box. Left alone,
Olivia Gardner skied high and headed the pass directly into the net for a quick 1-0 lead less than seven minutes into the match.
Gardner just missed a second goal when she delivered a shot off the goal frame. Less than a minute later, the Marauders doubled their lead in the 15
th minute on a goal by Gensch. In a similar position to where Spruenken provided the assist on the opening goal, Burke delivered a pass to Gensch on the near side of the goal box. With a defender hanging on her, the transfer from Sierra College redirected the pass just out of the reach of Dragons goalkeeper Quin Carter.
Spruenken scored the Marauders third goal in the 77
th minute to seal the game on a tremendous effort. Sprinting down the far sideline with one defender tugging on her jersey, two defenders closing in on the Marauders midfielder and Carter charging off her line, Spruenken rolled a long shot well outside the box inside the right post for her second goal in two games.
Burke finished the Marauders scoring spree in the 82
nd minute with a goal delivered into an open net from just inside the box as Carter scrambled to close the angle.
Molly Fischer made two saves in the game for the Marauders fourth straight clean sheet and her third complete effort shutout.
UMary held a massive advantage in shots (36-7), shots on frame (20-2) and corner kicks (11-2).
The Marauders continue on a 3-game road trip with a visit to Southwest Minnesota State on Friday, Sept. 27.
