Late rally comes up short as Marauders fall to #5 Mustangs

BISMARCK, ND – A late rally in the third set was not enough for the University of Mary volleyball team as they fell to #5 Southwest Minnesota State University 3-0 (25-9, 25-17, 29-27).

SMSU (10-0, 2-0 NSIC) came out in dominant fashion, winning the first set 25-9 over UMary (2-8, 0-2 NSIC). The Marauders were more competitive in the second set, falling 25-17 to the Mustangs.

The third set saw SMSU take a 9-5 lead, but UMary rallied back strongly and took a 22-19 lead. The Marauders had two opportunities late to win match point but fell short as the Mustangs won the last three points to take down the set 29-17.

True freshman Holli Klettheimer subbed in on the third set and recorded a season-high five kills on a .714 attacking percentage.

The Mustangs posted 46 kills compared to the 33 kills that the Marauders put up. SMSU had five blocks, while UMary had four.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Charli Blackman had 10 kills and nine digs.

Gabby Casky recorded six kills and four blocks.

Kaia Sueker posted 15 digs and two aces.

Maddy Freed put up 27 assists.

Chloe Solheid had 12 digs.

UP NEXT 
The Marauders are on the road next week as they take on the University of Sioux Falls in Sioux Falls, SD, at 6 pm on Friday, September 27. UMary then heads to Wayne, NE, to challenge Wayne State College on Saturday, September 28, at 1 pm.
