Marauders fall at home to Bulldogs

BISMARCK, ND – Mason Phillips had two tackles for loss and Jaylen Martin returned a fumble for a touchdown for the University of Mary in a 43-7 loss to visiting University of Minnesota Duluth, the preseason pick to win the Northern Sun.

One of the conference leaders for plays made behind the line, Phillips had two stops for a loss, including a sack he shared with Jakob Petry to give the junior linebacker 12 in his career. Phillips also had a pair of quarterback hurries and eight total tackles.

In a rugged first half, the Marauders (1-3 overall/0-3 NSIC) halted the Bulldogs (2-1 overall / 1-1 NSIC) opening drive on a fumble recovery in the UMD red zone. After UMary punted to end its first drive, UMD scored with four seconds left in the opening period for a 7-0 lead.

The Marauders defense stopped the Bulldogs next possession with a 4th down stop, keyed by a Christopher Federico sack on a 2nd-and-9. UMD added another touchdown with 6:48 to play in the second quarter to enter intermission with a 14-0 lead.

UMD found another gear in the third to post a trio of touchdowns.

Continuing to battle, the Marauders defense forced a third turnover in the final quarter. With the ball laying on the turf at the UMD 36 yard line, Martin scooped up the ball and outraced everyone to the end zone for the Marauders lone touchdown of the game. It was UMary's third defensive touchdown of the season.

Mujeeb Rufai paced the Marauders offense with eight catches for 82 yards, including a long gain of 31. Carl Henry picked up 36 yards rushing on five carries.

Federico led the UMary defense with nine stops (eight solo) and had a sack.

Maleik Bradford posted his first collegiate interception. Martin and Horne both recovered fumbles.

Kyle Wallsjasper threw for two touchdowns and 135 yards and ran for 138 yards and one touchdown for the Bulldogs. Matt Weerts made three tackles behind the line and Landon Carter, Mac Strand and Andrew Klopp all had 2.5 tackles for loss.

The Marauders next head to northern Minnesota to face #21 Bemidji State University at 2 pm on Saturday, September 28.
