Marauders force four turnovers by #21 Beavers but BSU takes the win

BEMIDJI, MN – The University of Mary forced #21 Bemidji State University to commit four turnovers. The Marauders hopes of taking advantage of the miscues and dampening the Beavers homecoming were dashed as BSU outpaced the UMary 43-7 in Northern Sun play.

UMary has faced a rugged schedule to start Northern Sun play. This is the fourth straight week the Marauders (1-4 overall, 0-4 NSIC) have faced a team that has either been in the top 25 of national rankings or have received votes this season. BSU is now 4-1 overall and 3-1 in the NSIC.

Three of the four turnovers forced by UMary came in Bemidji State's red zone. Jakob Petry and Matty Horne both intercepted passes for the Marauders while Antwon Jenkins and Andres Finlayson each recovered fumbles.

Horne played a part in both of the BSU turnovers in the first half. He intercepted a tipped pass late in the first 1st quarter at the BSU 41 with UMary down 6-0. The Marauders were unable to take advantage of the short field.

The Marauders forced turnovers on the last two Beavers possessions of the first half and both came in the red zone. Horne caused a BSU fumble that Jenkins recovered at the UMary 4 yard line with 1:52 left in the second quarter. Petry then intercepted a pass at the UMary 17 with 1:20 left before intermission to send the Marauders into the locker room trailing 20-0.

UMary pulled within 27-7 with 3:41 remaining in the third quarter when Luke Bodine hauled in a 10 yard scoring pass from Sofian Massoud. The junior tight end finished the game with six catches for 89 yards and the score to pace the Marauders offense.

The Beavers scored late in the third and added another touchdown early in the fourth to seal the homecoming win for BSU before Finlayson ended the last drive by the home team with a fumble recovery at the UMary five.

The Marauders committed just one turnover in the game, an interception late in the third quarter. UMary is now +5 in turnovers this season, forcing 11 turnovers in five games (seven interceptions, four fumbles) while committing just six of its own (six interceptions). The Marauder have not lost a fumble this season.

Mason Phillips led the Marauders in tackles with seven. Tofa Wilson had UMary's lone sack and Travis Biery and Eli Heinrich both had tackles for loss.

The Marauders now return for homecoming and will host Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday, October 5. Game time is 2 pm at the MDU Resources Community Bowl. Tickets are available online at www.UMaryTickets.com.
