Sprueken goal sparks Marauders past Highway 83 rival Beavers 1-0 in NSIC opener

BISMARCK, ND – A second half goal by Rio Spruenken was all the University of Mary soccer team needed to claim victory in the Marauders Northern Sun opener. In a meeting between two of the stingiest defenses in the nation, UMary knocked off visiting Minot State University 1-0.

Both teams have now allowed one goal in four games. The Marauders have reeled off three straight shutouts after allowing a single goal in the season opener. UMary improves to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the Northern Sun. Minot State slips to 2-1-1 overall and 0-1 in the NSIC.

This was the Marauders first win over the Beavers since 2019.

Despite an 8-4 edge in total shots and a 2-1 advantage in shots on frame, UMary was unable to solve the Minot State defense in the first half. The Marauders would change the equation early in the second half.

It was the Beavers who nearly got on the board first, though, as a Minot State shot bounced off the right post in the visitors best scoring opportunity of the day.

The Marauders responded nearly immediately. Minot, ND, native MaLiah Burke played the ball from the right endline back to Olivia Gardner near the penalty mark. The Marauders all-conference forward slid the ball forward to Spruenken just inside the goal box. The German midfield unleashed a withering shot with her left foot into the right third of the net for the 1-0 UMary lead in the 52nd minute.

Spruenken nearly doubled the Marauders lead in the 60th minute with a couple shot attempts inside the box but was denied on both attempts.

UMary's defense held strong and made sure the lone goal was enough. The Beavers didn't get their first shot on goal of the second half until the 83rd minute but both Minot State scoring efforts were turned aside by UMary goalkeeper Molly Fischer.

Recording her second straight solo clean sheet, Fischer finished with three saves in the game.

The Marauders held a 17-8 edge in shots and a 9-3 advantage in shots on frame. Minot State did take five corner kicks to three for UMary but the Beavers committed more fouls 11-9.

UMary next visits MSU Moorhead with a 1 pm Northern Sun game on Sunday, September 22, in Moorhead, MN. The road game is the first of three straight for the Marauders.
